3 officers, 1 firefighter honored

ST. LUCIE COUNTY ó Three local law enforcement officers and one firefighter were honored for their achievements at the Hundred Clubs annual dinner May 21.

Sgt. Chris VanDeventer, an 18-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, was named Deputy of the Year. VanDeventer, the supervisor of the Crime Prevention Unit, helped implement a reverse 9-1-1 system that alerts residents of public emergencies, neighborhood watch meetings, crime trends and sexual predators in the area. He also has been active with developing crime prevention programs for businesses and seniors.

Andrew Samson was honored as the Firefighter of the Year. He is a 19-year veteran of the St. Lucie County Fire District and is currently a driver and engineer. He was honored for his role in developing a training program used by engineers and firefighters.

"He's been a great asset to the department and its nice recognition for the hard work he's done," said Battalion Chief Carlos Duran, spokesman for the St. Lucie County Fire District.

Officer Ian Harris was named the Port St. Lucie Officer of the Year. Harris, a three-year veteran of the force was honored for the large amount of DUI arrests and tickets he has logged over the past year, said Officer Kacey Donnell, a police spokesman.

Sgt. Dennis McWilliams was named the Fort Pierce Officer of the Year. McWilliams, a 13-year veteran of the force, was honored for his ability to make the most of limited resources. Some of the projects he has been involved with include playing classical music to keep drug dealers away from school zones, the Paint the Town initiative and working with local crime watch programs.

"Sgt. McWilliams is the kind of law enforcement professional any community would be proud to have," wrote Chief Eugene Savage in a letter to the Hundred Club.

The Hundred Club of St. Lucie County helps support the families of firefighters, officers and rescue workers who are injured or killed in the line of duty.
