Microphone Stand Impales Pregnant Woman
ANN ARBOR, Mich., 12:54 p.m. EDT June 11, 2003 - A pregnant woman was flown to the University of Michigan Hospital Wednesday morning after reportedly being impaled by a microphone stand.
The woman, believed to be in her third trimester, fell from her second-story loft, which resulted in the pole going through her chest, Local 4 learned. The accident happened at a home located in the area of Grand River and Academy in Green Oak Township around 7:30 a.m., according to fire officials.
Neighbors said the woman was getting her children, ages 6 and 4, ready for school when the accident happened. It is not known how the woman fell from the second floor.
Friends arrived at the scene to check on the victim.
"I found out that she fell out of the loft and jabbed a mike stand in her chest," friend Cindy Noonan told Local 4.
The victim was able to call 911 and was conscious when emergency crews arrived at the scene, the station reported. Her 6-year-old son had also called 911, according to the station's report.
The microphone stand was still in the woman's chest when she was flown to the hospital. A makeshift landing pad was created for the medical helicopter at a nearby intersection.
The Brighton Fire Department reportedly assisted the Green Oak Fire Department with the call.
The woman was listed in serious condition. The condition of her unborn child is not known.
Neighbors said the woman was due to give birth in about three weeks.
