Apartment blaze leaves family of five homeless

A family of five was left homeless Monday after their apartment was gutted by fire.

Firefighters arrived at the triplex on the 300 block of West Dixie Court in Fort Lauderdale around 3:15 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Division Chief Stephen McInerny said. They found flames shooting out from one of the bedroom windows and thick columns of smoke.

Crews had the fire out within minutes, but not before the blaze caused more than $20,000 of damage to the home. Investigators said they think an electrical problem with an air conditioner may have started the fire.

The family who lived there -- Brenda Green, her 7-, 10- and 13-year-old children, and an uncle -- Charles Ware, escaped the house unharmed. The Fort Lauderdale Housing Authority, which owns the house, was trying to find shelter for the family.
