OLD BRIDGE: A former chief of the South Old Bridge Volunteer Fire Company was sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday for raping a girl who was between 12 and 13 years old at the time of the assaults.
Thomas J. Behnke, 42, a father of three who served as chief of the fire company in 2000 and 2001, will serve his sentence at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, authorities said.
The onetime mechanic with NJ Transit pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated-sexual assault on Feb. 7 and surrendered to authorities as a condition of the plea agreement, said Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Julia McClure.
He sexually assaulted the girl, a friend of Behnke's family, numerous times in a fire company vehicle and at fire headquarters in 1998 and 1999 over a six-month period.
McClure said the girl told a friend about the abuse, and the friend approached the victim's parents. The parents notified the police, and Behnke was arrested shortly afterward in August.
She said Behnke was still an active member of the fire company at the time of his arrest.
Until Feb. 7, he was free on $175,000 bail.
Once he serves his sentence, Behnke will undergo community supervision for life, a form of intensive parole, and will have to register as a Megan's Law sex offender, she said.
