    Default Hot Dogs Anyone??

    Man Eats 44 Hot Dogs

    July 5, 2003 10:37 AM EDT

NEW YORK, Jul 04, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A svelte, 130-pound Takeru Kobayashi ate 44 and a half hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes Friday, winning a hot-dog eating contest on New York's Coney Island.

The Japanese national needed just 12 minutes to eat his way to a win at the 88th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

He beat out 20 other competitors for the "Coveted International Mustard Yellow Belt." Kobayashi also wins a year's supply of hot dogs.

To get all those franks down, he deployed his "Solomon method" that involves snapping the hot dogs in half before swallowing them. The method has earned him the nickname Tsunami, the CTV.ca News reported.

The two-time defending champ jumped up and down hoping to push the food down before continuing. He also lifted his shirt at the end to show his swollen stomach.

Coverage of this spectacle is pretty extensive in the NYC area. What amazes me is that no one ever choked to death. This is truly entertaining, but disgusting.

BTW, William "Refrigerator" Perry was in this year's contest. To put this in perspective, he weighs about 360 and only ate 14.

On the subject of hotdogs. Why do they give you 8 hotdogs in a pack yet only 6 rolls in a bag?

Still why do they give you less rolls than hotdogs?

Here are some of the "explanations" you'll hear: (1) We do it that way because everybody else does. If we started doing ten to the package we'd have to charge more, consumers wouldn't notice they were getting more, and we'd lose business. Fine, but why did the first guy start packing eight? (2) There is something inherent in baking tray or oven design that makes ten impractical to produce. Not true. Continental Baking, maker of the Wonder brand and one of the largest companies in the industry, sells both eight-packs and ten-packs, depending on "consumer preferences and local market conditions." What this means is that if enough people want ten-packs and everybody else is selling them, Continental will too. St. Louis, for one, is said to be a big ten-pack town. (3) Ten-packs are a clumsy shape and tend to get broken up when they're tossed around on supermarket shelves. This is close to the truth, I think (see below), but obviously not that close, since Continental somehow manages to cope.

Hmmm...I managed to find an 8 pack of hot dogs to go with my 8 pack of buns, I think they were those fancy ones that NASCAR uses. I don't remember the brand name though.
Why do I *always* have to be the calm one?
Note to self: first spell check then post.
