Utah-2 Alarm Apartment Fire
2-alarm fire damages Taylorsville apartment
A Taylorsville apartment building was evacuated Saturday after a two-alarm fire broke out on a basement-level patio and spread up the outside of the three-story structure.
About a dozen families in the Summerwood Apartments, 1976 W. Fairwood Drive, (5735 South) were evacuated, Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen said. The fire started about 3:30 p.m. on the outside of the building and spread quickly from the basement apartment upward, burning up two outside balconies.
Only the basement apartment suffered so much damage as to be uninhabitable, Petersen said.
Residents unsuccessfully used fire extinguishers to try to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Salt Lake County firefighters used a water cannon to quickly douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the building. High temperatures and low humidity in the summer allow fires to move faster, Petersen said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently considered suspicious because of conflicting information from witnesses, Petersen said. The resident who lives in the basement apartment was out of town this weekend, Fitzgerald said.
No one was injured in the blaze. Salt Lake County firefighters fought the fire with four engines, two fire trucks and two rescue units. Fire departments from Midvale, Murray and West Jordan assisted.
