On Friday, July 04, 2003, at 1416 hours (2:16 p.m.) twenty five companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four Battalion Command Teams, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Brush Patrol, three Los Angeles Helicopters, one LA County Helicopter, one LA County Engine, six LA County Camp Crews, and other support personnel, under the direction of Assistant Chief Gregory A. West, responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire near the intersection of West Devonshire Street and North Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the Chatsworth area. First units on the scene reported approximately three acres of moderate to heavy brush burning uphill in rough terrain. Firefighters immediately provided structure protection for a condomium complex that was being threatened by the fire. Firefighters using handlines and aided by aggressive water drops confined the fire to approximately ten acres of brush and the fire was extinguished in approximately one hour and forty-one minutes. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is listed as children playing with illegal fire works.
