Truck rams cars, kills three women outside Tampa

Associated Press, July 10, 2003 - 04:07 AM

A 10-ton septic truck ran a stop sign, plowed into a car and killed three women inside, police said.

James Karl Scheffler, 73, of Ruskin, was driving a Southern Septic & Sewer Co. truck south on Interstate 75 Wednesday when he exited and tried to cross a state road to turn left. While attempting to turn, the truck broad-sided a Mercury Grand Marquis, said Lt. W.L. Parker of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The truck dragged the car off the road and into a grassy median, then stopped with part of the car trapped underneath, Parker said.

Cleo Broome, 66, of Ruskin, and two relatives, Janis Creason, 48, and Amy Creason, 36, both of Georgia, died in the crash.

It took emergency workers nearly three hours to free the bodies, Parker said.

Investigators found no evidence that alcohol or drug use contributed to the crash. Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Rod Reder said Scheffler ran a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp.

Scheffler and an unidentified passenger in his truck were not hurt. As of late Wednesday, deputies had not filed charges against Scheffler.
