LOS ANGELES, CA:
MULTI-PATIENT TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH ENTRAPMENT:

On Sunday, July 06, 2003 at 1229 Hours (12:29 PM PDT), seven Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, eight LAFD Rescue Ambulances, the LAFD Heavy Rescue and Urban Search and Rescue Companies, one LAFD Helicopter, two EMS Battalion Captains and one Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of 10th Battalion Commander Richard Markota responded to a multi-patient traffic collision with entrapment at 16644 West Roscoe Boulevard in North Hills. The first Company arrived to discover a large crowd gathered around three vehicles involved in a collision. While the crowd was calmly removed from the roadway, Firefighters swiftly triaged six injured persons, two of whom were trapped within the wreckage of separate vehicles. A side-by-side effort with two sets of hydraulic rescue tools quickly freed the injured pair, who joined the remaining four in receiving competent and compassionate care prior to transport. The youngest patient, an 8 year-old boy with severe head injuries, was taken by ambulance to adjacent Van Nuys Airport, where a waiting LAFD Air Ambulance rapidly transported him to the Pediatric Critical Care Center at distant Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The other patients, ranging in age from 11 to 42 years were transported by LAFD ambulance to area hospitals. There were no Firefighter injuries. Investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division will be handling the investigation.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
CIVILIAN FIRE FATALITY:

On Sunday, July 6, 2003 at 2343 Hours (11:43 PM PDT), four Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters and one LAFD Rescue Ambulance under the direction of 17th Battalion Commander Mark Jones responded to a Civilian Fatality Structure Fire at 18254 West Saticoy Street in Reseda. A person knocking on the door of the nearest Fire Station initially alerted Firefighters. Quickly departing, they traveled nearly one third of a mile to discover a well-involved travel trailer in the rear yard of a one-story single-family home. Using handlines in a bold and decisive offense, Firefighters expertly confined the flames to the twenty-foot trailer, extinguishing the fire less than seven minutes after they departed the station. Despite their rapid response and efficient actions, Firefighters were unable to save a 60 year-old man who was found deceased within the makeshift rental dwelling, one of several on the property. Monetary loss from the fire is estimated at $7,000. The cause of this late night blaze remains under active investigation by Los Angeles Fire and Police investigators. Officials from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office are seeking to positively identify the decedent as well as determine the cause, manner and time of his death.
