Utah-Utah County Brush Fire
Fire blazes near Saratoga Springs
Date:Sunday, July 13 @ 00:00:30 MDT
Topic:Valley and State
Fire crews battled to extinguish a 123-acre blaze on Lake Mountain west of Utah Lake on Saturday. The fire was human caused, erupting as a result of target shooters in the area, said Teresa Rigby, fire information officer for the Bureau of Land Management.
The blaze was 30 percent contained late Saturday, and was expected to be fully contained by 3 p.m. today, she said. Fire crews from Lehi and Saratoga Springs joined state, federal, BLM and National Forest Service firefighters to jump on the blaze.
"It looks pretty quiet but on the ridge top there is still quite a bit of heat in some places," she said. "They have it pretty well in hand but they want to be sure -- all it would take is a little more wind and it could blaze up again."
The fire began on private property and then burned onto state and BLM land, she said. It is believed that the target shooters were acting legally at the time the blaze erupted; an investigation by the BLM and Utah County Sheriff's department was ongoing and it was unclear whether there would be reason to file any charges, she said.
"We've had several target-shooting fires in the past few weeks," she said. "That is how dry it is right now. It is legal, that is the thing that is odd about it. It is starting a lot of fires but people don't really realize it can happen."
Two air tankers, three helicopters and 76 firefighters were used Saturday. Fire and tracer ammunition restrictions are expected to go into place Thursday on all private, state and federal lands in Utah and surrounding counties, she said.
