Six hurt when SUV hits tree
Six people were injured in a Saturday afternoon accident south of McDavid after striking a tree in a sport utility vehicle.
Eleven-year-old twin girls were flown by helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital. Four other occupants were transported to Sacred Heart by ambulance.
Two of the patients were released, and four were listed in serious condition Saturday night, Sacred Heart Hospital officials said.
The single-car accident happened about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when the driver of a Ford Excursion carrying eight Lewisburg, Tenn., residents ran off U.S. 29 near the Bogia Road intersection, said McDavid Fire Chief Kenny Malone.
"They were on their way home after visiting the beach," Malone said.
According the Florida Highway Patrol, Jose Sanchez, 45, of Lewisburg was driving northbound in the inside lane of U.S. 29 when his left tires left the pavement.
Sanchez overcorrected, ran off the east side of the road and struck a tree, troopers reported.
Sanchez and Salvstid Jaimes, 45, were not injured. Those hurt in the accident were Lilia Garcia, 39; Nelly Garcia, 20; Valeno Garcia, 18; Sylvia Garcia, 11; and Samantha Garcia, 11; and Elfega Jaimes, 19.
Sacred Heart officials would not divulge which patients remained hospitalized Saturday night.
Sanchez faces careless driving charges.
