The Message Board of the Youngstown FD web site has an excellent "Apparatus Dictionary". The idea is to have photos of various styles of apparatus posted there so that it can be used as a reference. The photos already in the Apparatus Dictionary vary from early motorized apparatus to new deliveries.
Want to know what a 1939 Ahrens-Fox looks like? How about a Kenworth/Pierce, a Summit tanker or a Seagrave EMS patient transport engine? Don't see a topic for the type of apparatus you're looking for? Start a new category yourself or leave a photo request! Also, if you picture is smaller than 100 kb in size, it can be uploaded and stored on the YFD site.
Look for other features like the Virtual Swap Meet (post a free for sale or wanted ad for fire related item!) and the Fire Alarm Call Box Discussion. There are dozens of photo topics in the call box discussion showing unusual pieces of alarm equipment and photos of towns that are still using their dependable Gamewell systems! Have a picture of your favorite fire station, post it in the Fire Station topic where there old and new photos of stations from coast to coast. Many fire museums have photos and information listed on the site too.
Also, there are incident scenarios and a general firefighting discussion including an interesting new thread on enclosed pump compartments. Want to discuss a fire your town had recently or ask a "how would you do it question"? You can post notices about department fund raising events, parades or other events.
So, why not take a few minutes and have a look at the site? Maybe even register as a member and post a few pictures or comments! Stop in, say Hi! to everyone, and tell us what that nickname of yours means. It's fun and free....
LOS ANGELES, CA:
Dear Friend of the LAFD:
While the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department labor to protect those in America's second largest City, there are organizations that strive equally hard to protect and represent them.
With recent media reports of unsavory persons masquerading as Fire Service charities, we wanted to take a moment to assure you that a pair of authentic organizations in Los Angeles have officially and effectively represented and supported those who would at a moment's notice, rush into harms way to save the lives and properties of others.
Since 1906, during their own times of need, Los Angeles Firefighters have entrusted the Los Angeles Firemen's Relief Association (LAFRA) to be there for them and those they leave behind:
We also wanted to assure you that LAFRA *never* solicits over the phone or in person on behalf of the LAFD or any Firefighters, instead relying on the good nature of people like you who feel compelled to offer support. LAFRA always welcomes your call or visit.
Some of you probably know LAFRA best for their Dalmatian's Firehouse Store, which is *Open to the Public*. 100% of proceeds from the store directly benefit the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen's Fund:
We welcome you to learn more about LAFRA, or even order a cool T-Shirt, cap or mug from Dalmatian's Firehouse by following the links above.
Uniformed members of the Los Angeles Fire Department up to and including the rank of Captain, are represented by the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC):
... which is Local 112 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (AFL-CIO) . I am pleased to report that the UFLAC newspaper recently garnered 7 awards at the Western Labor Communications Association's Journalism Awards Contest. Among the noted local photographers and journalists recognized were:
- Mike Meadows, First Place - Best Photo
- Jeff Miller, Second Place - Best Photo
- Chris Jensen, Honorable Mention - Best Photo
- Peggy Sweeney Rainone, Third Place - Best Series of Articles
- Jerry Smith, Third Place - Best Column/Editorial
- Jim Perry, Third Place - Best Overall Publication
- Jim Perry, Second Place - Best Column/Editorial
We welcome you to view the Los Angeles Firefighter Newspaper (a publication of the Union Local*) on-line in PDF format at:
Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
