Family faces eviction for loud night prayers
BERLIN (Reuters) - A seven-member family faces eviction
from an east Berlin apartment tower after neighbors complained
about loud prayer sessions that keep the whole building awake
at night, a German newspaper said Thursday.
"I really don't want to disturb the neighbors but the high
volume is needed in the battle against the devil," Pierre D.,
the 42-year-old father of the Christian family, told Bild
newspaper. He is fighting an eviction order in court.
Neighbors told Bild the screams and singing that are part
of the family prayers in the second storey sometimes begin at
2:30 a.m. and can be heard all the way up to the fifth floor.
"We have to work in the morning and need our sleep," said
taxi driver Horst Berghahn, who lives on the third floor. He
said he asked the family to lower the volume several times
since they moved into the building 10 months ago but to no
    avail.

August 18, 2006 --Four British firefighters have been suspended because one took a spin. Not in a firetruck, but in a clothes dryer in their Manchester firehouse. While the foolish firefighter tumbled, his buddies taped the action, and later put it on the Internet.

August 19, 2006 -- They say dolphins have human-like intelligence.
Perhaps - but not the young male bottlenose dolphin splashing around Sarasota Bay in Florida, in a black Speedo bikini swimsuit. "Somehow he got his head and torso through the waist and one of the leg holes," reports biologist Randall Wells, adding that the suit "was hugging him right where his pectoral fins and body meet." Fearing the tight-fitting, synthetic suit could injure or kill the dolphin, a team of reseachers got it off him.

August 20, 2006 -- Two German women complaining via office e-mail about their partners' poor sex drives found the details of their private lives broadcast to thousands after one of them hit the wrong button. The e-mails were sent by accident to other government agencies, and then across Germany.

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) -- A man angry at firefighters who refused to rescue a cat from a tree was arrested after he started shooting at the fire crew, officials said. Jeffrey Cullen, 58, was charged with four felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said. A three-person fire crew went to Cullen's home Thursday when he reported a tree fire, but found no blaze, Hualapai Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said. Instead, Cullen told firefighters he wanted a cat rescued from his tree and knew they would only respond to a fire call, Edwards said. A battalion chief told Cullen to call animal control or wait for the cat to get hungry and come down. Cullen apparently didn't like the response, Edwards said. "He went back into the house, got a small black revolver and came outside shooting," she said. The firefighters and a 12-year-old boy who had come to see the fire truck ran for their lives, Edwards said. No one was injured. Deputies arrested Cullen after a brief standoff and struggle.

For all the life of me, i cant see a firefighter going to hell. At least not for very long. We would end up putting out all the fires and annoying the devil too much.

LONDON (Reuters) - Animal rights activists have described as "sick" a live art performance involving a naked woman cradling a dead pig for four hours.

Kira O'Reilly's show, called "Inthewrongplaceness" will be performed at the Newlyn Art Gallery in Penzance, southwest England, later Friday.

James Green, the gallery's director, defended the show, saying that the audience would be controlled, with one person at a time watching the performance for up to 10 minutes each.

"In terms of the gallery's view, we feel very strongly that we should provide audiences in the region with opportunities to see the kind of works that they have to go to London to experience," he told Reuters

He added that the gallery "had not received a single direct complaint" about the planned show, one of several live performances making up the Tract live art program.

But a spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called the performance "sick."

"As Miss O'Reilly seems to depend on the shock of using a murdered pig as a prop, perhaps lacking the talent to make it as a proper artist, may we suggest she take up a day job instead to pay the bills," she said. "Cruelty is not entertainment."

On the gallery's Web site (www.newlynartgallery.co.uk), O'Reilly calls the performance "a slow crushing dance with a pig for one person at a time."

"The work left me with an undercurrent of pigginess, unexpected fantasies of mergence and interspecies metamorphoses began to flicker into my consciousness."

August 22, 2006 -- Randy Bailey wanted fast food, and when he didn't get it fast enough at the Burger King three blocks from his St. Paul, Minn., home, he allegedly smashed the drive-through window. Police later learned why he was in such a hurry. Bailey is under house arrest for DWI and wears an electronic ankle bracelet that triggers an alarm four minutes after he strays more than 150 feet from home.

BEIJING (AP) - China's parliament is considering a law that
would bar teachers from insulting students after widespread
complaints of classroom humiliation, a news report said Wednesday.
The measure would "ban teachers from insulting and physically
punishing their students," the Xinhua News Agency said. It said
the ban was part of an amendment to a law on child protection being
considered by the National People's Congress.
Violators could be fired or given administrative punishments,
Xinhua said. It didn't say how the measure would define insults.
A survey last year by an official youth committee found that
"Chinese teachers often humiliate their pupils," the agency said.
It said the study found that "81.45 percent of primary school
students listed insults from teachers as their most serious
    problem."
A 17-year-old student committed suicide in 2004 after being
humiliated by a teacher in front of her classmates, according to
    the report.

NEW YORK (AP) - A mission of mercy at a hospital turned costly
for a priest who violated a city commandment: Thou shalt not park
    illegally.
The Rev. Cletus Forson, of St. Andrew the Apostle Church in
Brooklyn, was ticketed last month when he responded to an emergency
call from a parishioner afraid her mother would die without
receiving the sacrament of the sick.
Forson is now protesting the $115 parking ticket, although city
officials seem unlikely to absolve him.
"On humanitarian grounds, the law should not be interpreted and
applied so stringently that it will prohibit a religious leader
from doing his work," the priest said.
Forson said he knew the spot was illegal but he didn't have time
to look for a legal spot. He placed his clergy parking permit on
    the dashboard and went in.
"I couldn't get any parking," Forson said. "It is my
obligation to get there and administer to the needs of the sick."

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A motorist knew something was
very wrong when her SUV began meowing.
A 4-month-old kitten had climbed into a hole behind the
vehicle's glove box on Sunday and made its way behind the
dashboard, said the township's animal control officer, Dan
    McDonald.
The woman said she had left her car windows open because of the
warm weather, and that's when the stray, a gray tabby, sneaked
    inside.
McDonald helped dislodge the female kitty with the help of
    Steven Hodes, a veterinarian.
"She was driving around town and she was hearing something
meowing," Hodes said of the driver, whose name was not released.
McDonald said he tried to reach his hand inside the dashboard to
grab the cat, which only crept further back into the dashboard.
"All you saw was maybe a little bit of fur," McDonald said.
McDonald was able to hold the cat's foot while Hodes slipped a
needle into the limb and injected the kitten with ketamine, an
anesthesia that made the feline drowsy. Then he lifted her to
    freedom.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) - A man mistook a government building in
southern Austria for a bank and tried to rob it, police said.
The 34-year-old man thought a municipal building in the southern
village of Poggersdorf was a bank because it had an ATM machine in
the lobby, said Hermann Klammer, head of the criminal division at
    Carinthia province's police department.
The man fled the building after a woman he allegedly threatened
with an air gun told him she had no money and that he had made a
    mistake, Klammer said.
"At first, I thought he was making a bad joke," Austrian
broadcaster ORF quoted the woman, Helga Aichwalder, as saying.
The man, who was not identified, was arrested shortly after
Tuesday's incident and has admitted the act, Klammer said.
"This is an extremely odd case. I've never come across anything
    like this," Klammer said.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - An 85-year-old man who lost his driver's
license and was told he couldn't keep driving his lawn mower on
sidewalks now has a brand new ride.
An anonymous woman donated a motorized scooter Tuesday to
Benjamin Steinbach, which prompted this response: "Gee, I got to
learn to drive all over again."
Steinbach had been using a mower since the state took away his
driver's license two years ago for health reasons. He'd been making
trips to the supermarket, hardware store and City Hall.
But, after hearing about Steinbach's treks, Cedarburg Police
Chief Tom Frank noted that state law allows only motorized
scooters, wheelchairs and Segways on sidewalks.
Carol LaFontaine, director of the Cedarburg Senior Center, said
the mysterious donor contacted the center after reading about
    Steinbach and offered the scooter.
"It had been purchased for the woman's mother, but the mother
barely used it," LaFontaine said. "The donor felt that, if
someone could benefit from it, it was better that the scooter be
    used."
The police chief said Steinbach could drive the scooter on the
    sidewalk.
"I'm happy for him," the chief said.

"Boobs" on bikes and tanks attract big NZ crowd
WELLINGTON, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Thousands of people --
almost all of them men -- lined the main street of New
Zealand's biggest city on Wednesday as 25 topless porn stars
paraded on motor bikes and two old army tanks.
Businessmen, schoolboys and Japanese tourists lined
Auckland's Queen St to watch the "Boobs on Bikes" parade, which
went ahead despite the winter chill, a nippy wind and
    objections by some city officials.
"It does nothing for our image, it does nothing for our
city and I just think it gives us indecent exposure around the
country and around the world," Auckland city councillor Scott
    Milne told TV New Zealand.
"It's shabby and it's sleazy and we just don't need it."
The parade of leather-clad porn stars is part of an
"Erotica Expo" organised by self-styled "porn king" Steve Crow.
"You'll always have a vocal minority, you're always going
to have people who object to everything, be it religion or be
    it adult entertainment," Crow said.
"If you don't like it don't come," he said.
Many of the curious onlookers came with cameras and mobile
telephones to take pictures of the parade. Others held aloft
banners which read "Sleaze Brings Disease in Body & Mind".
Most of the local and international porn stars rode pillion
on motor bikes during the 30-minute parade. One man clad only
in leather pants rode astride a decommissioned army tank.
"I don't know what all the fuss was about, to be honest,"
    an unidentified male onlooker said.
Others debated whether the centrepieces of the parade were
    real or surgically enhanced.
Police allowed the parade to go ahead because New Zealand
law does not regard the public baring of breasts as indecent.
There were no reports of arrests during the parade, which
briefly distracted about 4,000 local workers at a nearby trade
    union protest.

Robber nabbed after taking same flight as victim
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German woman who was held up and
robbed in her Berlin apartment earlier this month was
astonished to see the thief waiting to board her flight from
Antalya in Turkey to the German capital, police said Tuesday.
The 37-year-old woman telephoned her husband who alerted the
authorities, police spokesman Joerg Kunzendorf said.
When the flight arrived at Berlin's Schoenefeld airport
late Sunday, police arrested the 25-year-old man, who was
wanted in connection with several other robberies.

Cons escape with different sort of pepper spray
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Prisoners in an Indonesian jail escaped
after blinding guards with a liquid laced with fiery chili
peppers, a police official said Tuesday.
Eighteen prisoners escaped from the Pematang Siantar
Penitentiary in North Sumatra province Sunday, with 15 later
recaptured and three still on the run, said Aspan Nainggolan, a
    police spokesman.
After being let out of their cells for breakfast, a group
of prisoners attacked four guards using chili liquid held in a
plastic water bottles and grabbed their keys.
A prison official said that the jail, housing more than 800
prisoners and located about 30 miles from the provincial
capital Medan, had never had a break-out like it.
As in many other Asian countries, Indonesians season most
meals with chili or use hot chili sauce.

Tom & Jerry in trouble in for smoking scenes
LONDON (Reuters) - They chase each other at high speed,
wielding axes and hammers. But the famous cartoon duo of Tom
and Jerry are in trouble in Britain for smoking on screen.
Media regulator Ofcom received a complaint from a viewer
who took offence at two episodes involving smoking.
In one, "Texas Tom," the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a
feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking
it with one hand. In the other, "Tennis Chumps," Tom's opponent
in a match smokes a large cigar.
In a bulletin posted online, Ofcom noted "concerns that
smoking on television may normalize smoking," and said that the
Turner company, licensee for Boomerang which aired the
cartoons, had agreed to edit some smoking scenes out of Tom and
    Jerry.
"The licensee has ... proposed editing any scenes or
references in the series where smoking appeared to be condoned,
acceptable, glamorized or where it might encourage imitation,"
Ofcom said, adding that "Texas Tom" was one such example.

LONDON (Reuters) - Musicians flying to and from Britain are
being forced to put delicate and valuable instruments into
aircraft holds, and one U.S. orchestra canceled its tour after
    new security measures were imposed.
The British Musicians' Union said Tuesday that rules
introduced this month after a suspected plot to blow up
aircraft between Britain and the United States could have a
    "devastating impact."
"Many artists, who generate significant income when working
abroad, are having their livelihoods threatened by being unable
to take their instruments onto an aircraft as hand luggage,"
said the union's assistant general secretary Horace Trubridge.
He said replacement costs for an instrument in excess of
30,000 pounds ($57,000) were "not uncommon."
The New York-based Orchestra of St. Luke's called off its
tour of Britain three days after the alleged plot was
    uncovered.

    Pirate scene hooks recruits
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shuhe Hawkins wanted to be a pirate
when he grew up. Apparently, he was not alone.
Hawkins is part of a subculture of pirate lovers across the
globe, a growing tribe that encompasses history buffs,
    musicians, actors and hipsters.
Across the United States, from New York City to Portland,
Oregon, the pirate movement has spawned pirate bars, social
circles, bands, festivals, magazines and apparel.
Devotees are attracted by pirate fashions, the spirit of
rowdiness and the opportunity to engage in anti-establishment
behavior. It's unclear where it began, but pirates are clearly
    in vogue.
"We are in the throes of its real peak," said Hawkins, 35,
who performs as pirate Luc the Lucky in Portland. "Pirates are
    like the new cowboys."
