Crowds flock to see human-like face on tree in Malaysian village:
    reports
    AP Photo
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Scores of people are flocking to a
village in northern Malaysia to see a betel nut tree which has
sprouted a human-like face, reports said Tuesday.
Newspapers carried pictures of the green face on a frond of a
seven-meter (23-foot) -high tree. The unexplained phenomenon has
led villagers in Kampung Paya to dub it the "ghost tree," the
    News Straits Times said.
The Star newspaper's Web site showed a picture of a tree with a
face-like feature reminiscent of a Pacific island ritual mask.
Owner Miah Majid, 60, told The Star that she spotted the face
last week and that it was the second time an unusual shape had
appeared on the 10-year-old tree in her backyard. The first
formation was in the shape of an eye, she was quoted as saying.
The frond will probably last another two weeks before it sheds,
    she said.
Superstitious village elders have advised onlookers not to make
any comments when they pass the tree, reports said. Other
enterprising villagers are selling photographs of the face for 2
    ringgit (US$0.55; euro0.45).

Couple jailed over 'royal' wedding rip-off
TOKYO (Reuters) - A fairy story ended behind bars for a
Japanese couple Monday, when they were jailed for staging an
elaborate fake royal wedding to defraud guests.
Yasuyuki Kitano and Harumi Sakamoto, both in their 40s,
invited hundreds of guests, including Japanese celebrities, to
a wedding reception in 2003, saying that Kitano was a member of
a defunct branch of the imperial family.
Guests at Japanese weddings traditionally bring with them
gifts of at least 30,000 yen ($260) in cash.
Pictures shown on television at the time showed Sakamoto in
the "junihitoe" 12-layered kimono worn by women of the imperial
    household on formal occasions.
"It was a malicious crime that cleverly took advantage of a
mentality for revering the imperial court and imperial family,"
Kyodo news agency quoted judge Takaaki Oshima as saying.

Shoe size mix-up costs German clothes thief dear
BERLIN (Reuters) - A bungling German thief stole a pair of
shoes in two different sizes and was caught when he went back
to the shop to fix his mistake -- decked out in the very
clothes he had stolen, authorities said Friday.
Police in the western city of Bielefeld said the shop owner
recognized the 20-year-old shoplifter because the white shoes
and sports jacket he wore were available only in his shop, and
had been stolen just two days earlier.
"You have to wonder why he went back into the shop in the
stolen get-up," said a spokeswoman for Bielefeld police. "It
seems he may not have been the brightest of thieves." The owner
spotted the man as he attempted to switch of the wrong-sized
shoe and alerted police, who arrested the thief.

Italian recluse taken from apartment after 26 years
MILAN (Reuters) - When Italian health officials came to
remove a woman from the apartment she has not left in more than
two decades they had to don respirators against the stench,
    newspapers reported Sunday.
The woman, named only as "Carmela," was in her late 50s,
weighed about 30 kg (66 pounds) and had hair two metres (seven
feet) long when officials came to take her to hospital, La
Repubblica, Il Giorno and La Stampa newspapers reported.
Firefighters and health officials in Macerata, a city about
200 km (120 miles) northeast of Rome, found the apartment's
windows sealed with adhesive tape and the shutters jammed shut.
A bout of influenza 26 years ago terrified Carmela so much
that she tried to seal herself off from germs by barricading
herself in her home, the papers said.
Her plight came to the attention of Italian authorities
after her brother, who leaves tinned food outside her front
door, called police to say that upcoming medical treatment
would prevent him from carrying on.

Tanning salons give color to Chinese yuppies
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese office manager Ye Lu likes
working up a sweat -- not in the gym, but in a tanning salon.
"Tanned skin looks great on me and I like to hear my
friends saying how fresh and healthy I look," said Ye, a young
Chinese white collar worker, as he walked out of a tanning room
in downtown Shanghai, perspiration glistening on his forehead.
Ye hits the tanning beds twice a week, despite the
objections of his wife, who still favors a traditional pale
    complexion.
Next door to Ye's salon, Zhang Xinyu sits at the reception
desk of a skin-whitening beauty salon, looking quietly and
uncomprehendingly at the dark-hued Chinese customers coming and
going from the neighboring tanning parlor.
"Aesthetically and culturally, I think light skin is more
appealing for Asian people because it looks pure and noble,"
Zhang said, justifying the appeal of the services her spa
    offers.

    Cyclist breaks finger punching bus
ALMUSSAFES, Spain (Reuters) - Italy's Alessandro Petacchi
was forced to quit the Tour of Spain Sunday after he punched
his team bus and broke a bone in his right hand thereby ending
    his troubled 2006 season ended.
Petacchi finished stage 15 to Almussafes but was so angry
he did not win the sprint that he vented his frustration on the
door of the Team Milram bus and fractured the top of the fifth
    metacarpal on his right hand.
The fracture means Petacchi, who fractured his kneecap
during stage three of the Giro d'Italia in May and missed the
Tour de France in July, will not be able to continue in the
    three-week Tour of Spain.
"I know I've done something stupid but I did it because I
was very angry after having a real chance of winning for the
first time for months," Petacchi said in a statement issued by
    his Milram team.
"I want to apologize to my team mates and team managers but
    I was so angry I couldn't control myself. There's no doubt I've
    made a mistake but I'm a human being, I'm not a machine."

Bicyclist hit by second car waiting for ambulance after first
    crash
GREENVILLE, South Carolina (AP) - A driver has been charged with
leaving the scene of an accident with injuries after her car hit a
bicyclist who was in the road waiting on an ambulance to treat him
for injuries after being hit by another car.
Shannon Harris turned herself in to investigators Sunday night
after initially leaving the scene of the accident, Lance Cpl. Kathy
Hiles, a spokeswoman for the Highway Patrol, told The Greenville
    News for a Monday story.
The cyclist, whose name has not been released, was in serious
condition at a local hospital, Hiles said, adding the man was not
wearing a helmet and his bike lacked proper lighting.
The cyclist was hit first by a Nissan, but no charges were filed
    in that case, Hiles said.
While he was waiting in the road for an ambulance, he was struck
by the second car, whose driver stopped for a moment before leaving
    the scene.

Fish kills spear-fishing diver off Florida
MIAMI, Sept 11 (Reuters) - A Florida diver shot a large
grouper with a spear gun then apparently drowned when the fish
sped into a hole, entangling the man in the line attached to
the spear, investigators said on Monday.
The 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld, was
free-diving in about 25 feet (7.5 metres) of water off the
lower Florida Keys on Saturday and speared a Goliath Grouper,
Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mark Coleman said.
"It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the
spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole
in a coral rock, effectively pinning the man to the bottom of
the ocean," Coleman said in a news release.
Police divers found the speared fish tightly wedged into
the hole, with the man's body still tangled in the line, a
    sheriff's spokeswoman said.
Goliath Grouper are the largest members of the sea bass
family and can weigh hundreds of pounds.

    Default Ever had crabs?

SANTA ANA, California (AP) - Eight diners who came down with a
rare lung infection after eating raw shellfish consumed live
sawagani crabs on a dare, health officials said.
Health investigators said Friday that the crabs, which are
usually served fried, were eaten at various southern California
    restaurants.
Dan Lauriano, who owns two of the restaurants where diners
became ill, said some patrons apparently started a tradition where
they would reach into a jar of live crabs and devour them raw as
    their friends cheered them on.
"It was kind of like 'Fear Factor,"' said Adrian Guerrero, a
manager at one of the restaurants in Mission Viejo, referring to
the reality television show in which contestants take on dares.
"I never saw anyone just come in and say they wanted them
raw," Guerrero said. "But after having a few beers or cocktails
or sake" they would rise to the challenge.
The results were not pretty, and after some of his patrons
became sick the owner stopped ordering the crabs from the
    distributor.
Six to 10 weeks after eating the crabs, participants ended up
with a parasite carried by the crab that migrates from the
intestines to the lungs and causes lung fluke infection.
Symptoms, which can take as long as 10 weeks to surface, include
coughing, diarrhea, breathing problems, abdominal pain, fever and
    hives.
If left untreated "it can turn into a very serious lung
infection or, in fact, impact the brain," said Deanne Thompson,
spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Care Agency.
"Most restaurants serve them flash fried but occasionally I
guess people get it into their heads to eat them raw or live and
that's a bad idea," Thompson said.

SNYDER, Oklahoma (AP) - The police chief, the mayor and a
councilman in this small town resigned Friday amid an uproar over
nude photos of the chief's 300-pound (135-kilogram), tattooed wife
that she posted on a Web site.
Dozens of residents of the town of 1,500 had demanded Police
Chief Tod Ozmun resign, and the district attorney recommended an
obscenity investigation, but the City Council decided last week
that the pictures were protected by the First Amendment.
On Friday, Ozmun, Mayor Dale Moore and Councilman Clifford
Barnard said they were stepping down because they were fed up with
the public attention and criticism of the chief. Another council
member resigned earlier over the council's support of Ozmun.
"This has turned into a media circus," Ozmun said. "I don't
feel like me staying in office is going to benefit my department or
my staff. This has turned into a mess. This is ridiculous.
    Absolutely ridiculous."
Ozmun's 43-year-old wife, Doris, told The Oklahoman newspaper
that she was removing the photos from the Internet, and they
appeared to have been taken down Friday. "You know what I call
this? I call this a witch hunt," she said.
Some of the pictures show her with an American flag draped off
    her shoulder.
"They have no morals as far as I'm concerned," said Shirley
Anderson, who served as mayor in the 1990s and whose husband was
mayor before that. "You should have respectable people in office.
They need to go somewhere else where this is accepted."
Cristen Edgar, a 16-year-old high school student, said: "I
don't think it's right for him to be the chief of police and for
his wife to be doing what she's doing."
The police chief defended his wife, saying, "People in this
country do what she does on a daily basis."
He said he has had long discussions with his wife about the
photos but does not tell her what to do.
"My wife is 6-foot-3 and weighs 300 pounds," said Ozmun, who
became chief in January 2005. "If there is somebody that thinks
they can control her, have at it. I have tried for 11 years and
    haven't been able to."
In a statement, Barnard said he didn't want to be associated
with the police chief's detractors, "because I've never read
anywhere in the Good Book that the Lord wanted us to persecute
those that did not hold the same morals or values."
The mayor told The Oklahoman that he believes the way Ozmun has
been treated is wrong, and "I don't want to work in a community
    like this."
District Attorney John Wampler has asked the Oklahoma State
Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter.
"In my opinion, the photos that I was shown are obscene based
on local community standards," he said. "Whether a court would
agree may be a different matter."

    Default Auto Sex??

    Auto-eroticism undoes Slovak driver
(Editors: please note sexual nature of content)
BRATISLAVA, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A Slovak driver who crashed
into a bus shocked rescuers who found him unconscious and half
naked with a vacuum pump on his penis.
Police said the 42-year-old man, driving an old Citroen in
the Slovak town of Levice, had ignored a "give way" sign.
"It's very likely he had auto-sex while driving, it is a
matter of investigation. After the accident he was found lying
in the seat, his pants were off and it (the pump) was placed on
his penis," police officer Peter Polak told Reuters.
"I've never seen anything like this, nor have my
    colleagues," he added.
The man was taken to hospital with head injuries.

Default TV soap on Indonesian mud disaster set to air

    By Achmad Sukarsono
SIDOARJO, Indonesia, Sept 13 (Reuters) - A noxious mudflow
from near an exploratory oil well in Indonesia is the backdrop
to a new TV soap opera -- and it has the backing of the very
company under fire for the disaster.
The 13-episode love story is being backed by PT Lapindo
Brantas, the local firm operating the well in East Java
    province.
There has been growing public anger over repeated failures
to stem the flow and complaints of insufficient compensation.
"We don't want to blame anyone through this show. We want
to show that behind this tragedy something positive can
appear," director Daniel Rifki told Reuters during a break in
    filming.
The oozing grey mud has swamped an area larger than Monaco
and displaced more than 10,000 people from their homes in the
    Sidoarjo area of East Java.
Lapindo, which disputes the mud is directly connected with
the drilling operation, is now starting work on a new technique
to stop the flow by slant digging from three relief wells.
A company spokesman told Reuters that the company supported
the making of the TV show, but declined to elaborate.
The plot for 'Gali lubang, tutup lubang' (Dig a hole, close
a hole) revolves around a displaced youth activist who tries to
motivate fellow mud victims to get back on their feet.
Lapindo is a unit of PT Energi Mega Persada, partly owned
by the Bakrie Group, which is controlled by the family of chief
    social welfare minister Aburizal Bakrie.
The noxious mud, which started pouring out of the ground in
late May, gives off fumes that have made people ill and caused
    respiratory problems.
Police have declared nine Lapindo employees suspects in an
    environmental pollution investigation.

Arrow Skinny models wearing thin in fashion shocker

MADRID (Reuters) - The world's first ban on overly thin
models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage
among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions
    at other venues.
Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models
after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy
their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.
Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and
health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.
But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said
the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for
    illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.
"I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this
tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination
against the model and what about the freedom of the designer,"
said Gould, Elite's North America director, adding that the
move could harm careers of naturally "gazelle-like" models.

    Electric man electrocuted
HANOI (Reuters) - A Vietnamese man who once appeared on
national television to demonstrate his ability to resist
electric shocks has been electrocuted while repairing a
    generator, an official said Tuesday.
Nguyen Van Hung, aged in his early 40s, was killed in Tay
Ninh province near the Cambodian border while repairing the
generator without first cutting the power supply, a local
    official said.
"When alive, he used to demonstrate at our office how he
would insert two fingers into the electrical plughole without
    problems," the official said.
Hung, nicknamed "Hung Electric," had appeared on
    television's "Strange Stories of Vietnam."

Post Farmer over the moon after cow gets jump start

CANBERRA, Sept 13 (Reuters) - A prized cow that lost a leg
in a farm accident in Australia may soon be walking back on all
four hooves after medical experts offered to help its owner
    find an artificial leg.
Farmer Geoff Heazlewood began the search for a new leg for
his breeding Jersey Theresa two months ago after the cow fell
down a river bank and broke its leg, forcing vets to amputate
the limb between the knee and ankle.
Theresa is a prized breeding cow at Heazlewood's stud farm
in the southern island state of Tasmania, with genetic lines
from Canada, and the farmer said he was determined to get the
    animal back on four hooves.
"I just want to try and do the best I can for the animal,"
Heazlewood told Reuters on Wednesday. He said prosthetic legs
were common for dogs and cats and were worth trying for a cow.
"The cow is perfectly well," he said, adding that Theresa
was able to hobble around her paddock despite losing the limb.
He said four prosthetic limb makers and experts had offered
to help make and fit an artificial lower leg.
Heazlewood said an artificial leg might be unusual for a
cow, but most stud farmers and breeders would go to
extraordinary lengths to look after their animals.

STOCKHOLM, Sept 12 (Reuters) - A man wielding a hatchet
caused downtown traffic to halt in Stockholm on Tuesday as
police cordoned off a bridge leading to the parliament building.
A Reuters witness said that the shaven-headed man was
dressed in grey, had a noose around his neck and was shouting
    and gesticulating.
The police refused to say if the man had made any demands.
