July 13, 2005 -- Officials in East Chicago turned off a streetlight after hundreds of people began crowding around it, claiming it cast the shadow of Jesus Christ. "The city respects everyone's religious beliefs, but it's getting to the point now where it's almost too dangerous," said city spokesman Damian Rico, who noted that cops had to bust up a brawl that broke out at the site and also deal with blocked cars.

July 14, 2005 -- Juren Ding finally got the lake view he always wanted but he may go to jail for it. Authorities say the 39-year-old Minneapolis homeowner chopped down 37 trees worth nearly $22,000 in a city park so he could have unobstructed views of Anderson Lake. "He didn't seem to think there was anything wrong," fumed city Parks Manager Stuart Fox. "I asked him what a fence means to him." Ding could face five years in jail where the views are notoriously lousy.

July 15, 2005 -- Motorists in Dallas were scared stiff when a corpse fell from the back of a mortuary truck and into the path of oncoming traffic. "The driver of the truck was not aware that he had lost the body," police Lt. Rick Andrews said. "He saw the open door. He stopped and looked. He turned around, went back and retraced his steps and found the body." Driver Mary Ellen Douglas, who witnessed the macabre incident, said: "I wanted to get out of there. It was too freaky for me."

July 16, 2005 -- Former Brooklynite Bruno Filippelli, a retiree living in Delray Beach, Fla., turned in an old Japanese rifle that had been collecting dust in his closet during a police gun-buy-back program. The World War II Navy veteran was pretty pleased with the $75 department-store gift card he got in exchange for the weapon he had bought more than 50 years ago for two packs of cigarettes until a gun expert reported it was a rare Arisaka Type 99 rifle worth about $5,000. Filippelli, 79, is now trying to get cops to abandon plans to melt down the gun with 450 other weapons acquired in the buy-back drive.

July 18, 2005 -- When will Drew Barrymore give up acting and start directing? Don't ask her, just ask her chest. The busty blond movie star says when "my boobs fall down to the floor and it all starts sagging and is hideous and gross and I shouldn't be in front of a camera . . . I'll just go behind the camera."

July 19, 2005 -- They take the concept of resting in peace seriously at the Humenik Funeral Chapel in Ohio, where the corpse is laid out on a mattress in a bedroomlike setting. Owner Joe Humenik got the idea after years of watching mourners awkwardly approach the casket, then scurry back to their seats. So what's next? "If a family requested it, I would use a recliner," Humenik said.

July 20, 2005 -- The two Long Island lovebirds who were caught having sex on a public-school roof were sprung yesterday and promptly kept the lovefest going after a night apart in jail. As soon as a judge freed them without bail, Rebekah Albee and Anthony Oddo celebrated by necking outside First District Court in Central Islip. The raunchy couple told The Post they had merely been trying to find a secluded spot to spice things up on Sunday. "We're crazy teens, we were just trying to have a little fun," said Albee, 19, perhaps forgetting her lover is 24. In the wake of their naked rooftop romp, Albee appeared before the judge without shoes, while Oddo was shirtless. "I guess that stuff just got lost someplace," Albee said. She said they picked the roof of her alma mater, the Kennedy Middle School in Port Jefferson Station, because her father "doesn't allow that kind of thing in the house."

July 21, 2005 -- An Oklahoma town's "Citizen of the Year" marched into a diner and shot a pregnant waitress in the head, chest and stomach because he was angry she wrote a letter to the local paper accusing him of spray-painting graffiti, cops said. Roy Westbrook, 63, of Hominy, who allegedly murdered Becky Clements, 26, had been defacing a rental home he owned, apparently in a bid to drive out the victim's sister, who lived there, authorities said. Westbrook had just been honored as Hominy's Citizen of the Year by the same newspaper where Clements' letter appeared...

July 22, 2005 -- Victoria Willmert and Christopher Baker wanted a memorable wedding and got one though they wish they could forget it. Celebratory candles inside the Lincoln, Ill., church where the service was held ignited a bouquet of silk wedding flowers, which, in turn, set the wooden altar cross ablaze. Guests fled and the bride's mom fell and broke a rib.

July 23, 2005 -- A suspect in a hit-run accident in Shoreline, Washington, had an explanation ready when cops tracked him down, according to court documents. He said he had gotten lost on his way to court and was speeding to make it there on time. Why was he going to court? Seems there was an earlier traffic matter he had to take care of.

July 24, 2005 -- When Bill Clinton visited Kenya last week, a small-town official was anxious to tell him his tale of unrequited love. Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor, 36, wanted to give Clinton 20 head of cattle and 40 goats for the hand of Bill's daughter Chelsea in marriage. "I am ready to wait for as long as I can," said Chepkurgor, who first wrote to Clinton five years ago. "I learned a lot about the Clintons through the media and was impressed about their staunch Christian values and their down-to-earth attitude," he said. "She was my first real love and she still is today."

July 25, 2005 -- Who chopped off Betty Boop's head?
That's the puzzling mystery facing cops in Virginia Beach, where a crook stole the head of a landmark, life-sized statue of the famed "Boop-boop-a-doop" girl from in front of the Cool & Eclectic Furniture and Fashion store. "Who would do this? She's made a lot of people smile," lamented owner Larry Estes, who said Betty's last crisis was two years ago, when Hurricane Isabel's winds severed her limbs.

July 26, 2005 -- An Indian yoga teacher swallowed 509 small fish and blew them out his nose within an hour in a bid to get into the record books. Vijaya Kumar said he was inspired by American daredevil Kevin Cole, who holds the record for the longest spaghetti strand blown out of a nostril in a single breath. "There are times the fish might glide back to the mouth, but by inhaling hard it can be brought up quickly," he explained.
Ookay, let see if we can get a FH member to get that record!Whos up too it...

Funny thing is, I see both sides of this arguement....

Northwestern women's lacrosse team sparks White House flap over flip-flops

    Canadian Press July 24, 2005

CHICAGO (AP) - There's a flip-flop controversy at the White House, and this one has nothing to do with President George W. Bush and John Kerry.

A photo of Northwestern University's national championship women's lacrosse team, taken during the athletes' visit to the White House last week, shows four of the nine women in the front row wearing flip-flop sandals along with their dresses and skirts.

The choice of footwear has prompted a mini-controversy - a flip-flop flap, if you will.

A front-page story in the Chicago Tribune included the headline "YOU WORE FLIP-FLOPS TO THE WHITE HOUSE?!" inspired by an e-mail sent to player Kate Darmody from her older brother after he saw the photo on the team's website.

Family members of other players expressed similar dismay, insisting the summer footwear staple was too casual for a visit with the president.

"Don't even ask me about the flip-flops," said the mother of player Aly Josephs. "It mortified me."

During an appearance Monday on television, Darmody and teammate Shelby Chlopak said players planned to auction off the flip-flops they wore to the White House, with the proceeds to go toward a fund for a 10-year-old girl with a brain tumour.

The women have defended their attire, arguing they wore a dressier version of the casual sandal.

"Nobody was wearing old beach flip-flops," said Josephs, who wore a $16 brown pair with rhinestones.

Darmody, 22, added: "I tried to think of something that would go well with my outfit and at the same time not be that uncomfortable. But at the same time not disrespect the White House."

In 2001, Bush's daughter Jenna, then 19, wore black flip-flops in court, along with pink capri pants and a sleeveless black shirt, when she pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol.

The term "flip-flop" was used heavily during last fall's presidential debates when Bush repeatedly accused Democratic opponent Kerry of switching positions on issues.

Default warning: sarcasm rant is ON!

    Oh My God! The horror!

There are more important things to worry about than what type of footwear somewbody wore to the White House!

    rant is now OFF.

July 27, 2005 -- A sicko Web site called murderauction.com is selling off the personal items of America's most notorious killers. Inventory includes Unabomber Ted Kaczynski's shoes, dishes and typewriter, John Wayne Gacy's Illinois license plate and letters written by Dennis Rader, the BTK killer. Much of the proceeds will go to the victims, but Gary Wright left with 200 shrapnel wounds from the Unabomber said, "I don't think there's ever enough money to pay for damage to your body, or your mind, or your psyche."

July 28, 2005 -- Ezekiel Rubottom has his left foot back exactly where he wants it in a bucket on the front porch of his Kansas home. Cops in Lawrence returned the amputated foot to him after seizing it to check out just how it got there. Rubottom, 21, had surgeons cut it off three weeks ago after a series of medical problems, asked the hospital if he could have it, then started keeping it in a bucket of formaldehyde. "Now I've got my foot back," he said. "That's all I wanted. I'm not sick or, like, a danger. I just wanted my foot."

Question HOW DUMB CAN A PERSON BE?

Thief's lesson: never rob a donought shop

    Canadian Press July 28, 2005

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - With an FBI office a few floors above him and the agent in charge waiting in line, Andrew Johnson picked the wrong coffee shop to rob.

The 34-year-old went behind the counter and grabbed $165 from a cash drawer, authorities said. Carl Spicocchi, head of the FBI's Toledo office, thought Johnson was an employee until the store manager confronted him.

Johnson then jumped over the counter and threw the store manager into a juice machine, police said.

The manager, Spicocchi and two others tried to get Johnson on the ground. Spicocchi said he called 911, and other FBI agents in the building came down and handcuffed Johnson.

Police charged Johnson, of Toledo, with robbery and felony vandalism. Authorities said he later kicked out the back window of a police car.
