April 15, 2005 -- A delivery of chicken wings to an upstate New York restaurant turned into a disaster when the truck dropping them off snared a power line. The wire above Jonathan's Restaurant in Endwell then pulled a 12-foot satellite dish off the roof, and the dish, in turn, crashed down on a natural gas line. Flames shot into the air when the gas ignited. "I guess it was an expensive delivery," the eatery's owner quipped.

April 16, 2005 -- This Goodwill customer certainly lived up to the store's name. Larry Hoffman of West Bend, Wis., bought a shirt in his local Goodwill thrift shop, took it home and found $2,000 in cash stuffed in the pocket. He didn't think twice about returning the loot, explaining, "When we were kids, it was always, 'Finders keepers, losers weepers.' But that's not really the case. You've got to keep the losers from weeping too much."

April 18, 2005 -- A Utah man opened up a vent in his new home to discover a box filled with $10,000 cash. "It was kind of scary to find that much money. I thought, 'Who is the owner?' " said Katsumasa Hibino, 35, of Orem. Turns out the home's previous owners hid the dough as a nest egg in 1998, but then the husband died and the widow forgot about the money. It's now been returned to her.

Speeding stop leads to other charges

    4/18/2005

TOWN OF NIAGARA - Driving 59 mph in a 30 mph zone landed a Niagara Falls man in hot water Sunday morning, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said.
Michael D. Williams, of James Avenue, was stopped on Lockport Road slightly before 3 a.m. When police checked his records, they found he had no driver's license, and a Breathalyzer test later showed his blood-alcohol level to be twice the legal limit.

Williams was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, speeding and unlicensed operation.

April 19, 2005 -- You've heard of road rage. Now comes computer rage.
An online survey by the University of Maryland's Laboratory of Automation Psychology and Decision Processes found that 20 percent of the respondents admitted they'd thrown a computer to the floor out of anger. They also described smashing, microwaving and cursing their machines, and one man even admitted urinating on his. Another said he'd thrown his laptop in a fryer, and at least three claimed to have shot at hardware.

April 20, 2005 -- An Illinois schoolteacher told his students they could earn extra credit by participating in a class "Get Naked Day,"
Bob Burt, in hot water with the teen students' parents, insists he really didn't expect the kids at Oak Forest HS to strip down, but just wear loose-fitting pants and flip-flops. Still, senior Tom McCullagh complained because "he knows our hormones are raging and we want to see each other naked, anyway."

Red face Hey Ray? What happens in Vegas.....Stays in Vegas?

He Sues Lover After Sex Change Hitch
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian who became a man to marry a
female relative was dumped after the surgery, a newspaper
    reported Monday.
Twenty-nine-year-old rubber tapper Kuttiyamma, born with
both male and female genitals, had been in love with the
relative, Laura, 25, for 15 years before having surgery to
become a man and change her name to Binu, the Hindustan Times
    reported.
But Laura became engaged to another man and Binu is suing
her for breach of trust after spending 50,000 rupees ($1,150)
on the sex change in southern Kerala state.
"She had agreed to marry me after the surgery," the paper
quoted Binu saying in the petition. "I took loans to pay the
    hospital bills."
Laura's fiance has since backed out of the wedding after
hearing of Binu. The paper did not say how Laura and
    Kuttiyamma/Binu are related.

    Red face Kissing cousins

Restaurant Fined for Throwing Out Kissing Lesbians
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A Swedish lesbian couple who were
thrown out of a Stockholm restaurant in 2003 for kissing won an
appeal Monday against an earlier court ruling that cleared the
    restaurant owner of sexual discrimination.
The Court of Appeals in Stockholm ordered restaurant owner
Aziz Cakir to pay 50,000 crowns ($7,100) in damages and to
cover the legal costs of Sweden's ombudsman against sexual
discrimination, HomO, which filed the appeal.
Cakir asked Anna Fernstrom and Susanne Gustafsson to leave
his restaurant after they kissed and later told police he did
not let anyone engage in such behavior on his premises
    regardless of their sexual orientation.
Stockholm District Court cleared him of discrimination, a
charge that can result in a year in jail, in the country's
first test of legislation against sexual discrimination in the
    provision of goods and services.
But HomO director Hans Ytterberg said the appeals court
found the restaurant failed to prove "these two girls behaved
in a way that would justify telling them to stop or telling
    them to leave the premises."

    Unhappy Sad...so sad

Indian boy slapped by mother kills himself
NEW DELHI, April 25 (Reuters) - An eight-year-old Indian
boy committed suicide after his mother slapped him for
quarreling with a friend over a bar of chocolate, police said
    on Monday.
Tapan Dhar, a resident of remote Suparpara village in West
Bengal state, drank pesticide on Friday after his mother
scolded him for a fight with a friend over a chocolate bar they
    had bought.
"Tapan was upset after his mother rebuked him and gave him
one slap. He then drank pesticide," Gora Guha Thakurata, a
police officer in the area, told Reuters by phone.
Dhar's friends took him to hospital where he died later,
    Thakurata said.

    Lightbulb HUH?

NEW DELHI (AP) - Only a quarter of condoms made in India are
used for sex, most of the others are used to make saris, toys and
bathroom slippers, a newspaper reported Saturday.
The condoms are valuable to manufacturers because of the
lubricant on them. Sari weavers place the condoms on their thread
spools and the lubricant on the prophylactics is rubbed off on the
thread, making it move faster through their sewing machines, The
Economic Times newspaper quoted an Indian industry official as
    saying.
Sari makers also turn the condom's inside out, place them on
their fingers and use the high-quality lubricant to polish gold and
silver threads used in the traditional Indian women's outfits.
India manufactures more than 1 billion condoms annually to check
population growth and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Walk your dog 3x a day or be fined, says Turin
ROME, April 22 (Reuters) - Dog owners in Turin will be fined
up to 500 euros ($650) if they don't walk their pets at least
three times a day, under a new law from the city's council.
People will also be banned from dyeing their pets' fur or
"any form of animal mutilation" for merely aesthetic motives
such as docking dogs' tails, under the law about to be passed in
    the northern Italian city.
"In Turin it will be illegal to turn one's dog into a
ridiculous fluffy toy," the city's La Stampa daily reported.
Italians can already be fined up to 10,000 euros and spend a
year in prison if found guilty of torturing or abandoning their
pets, but Turin's new rules go into much greater detail.
Dogs may be led for walks by people on bicycles, the rules
say, "but not in a way that would tire the animal too much".
Italy considers itself an animal-loving nation and in many
cities stray cats are protected by law. Still some 150,000 pet
dogs and 200,000 cats are abandoned in Italy every year,
    according to animal rights groups.
To enforce the law, Turin police would rely largely on the
help of tipsters spotting cruel treatment by their neighbours,
    La Stampa reported.
It said the 20-page rulebook gives Turin the most stringent
animal protection rules in the country. It even bans fairgrounds
from giving away goldfish in plastic bags.

When Rava Asks You to Turn Out the Light...
CALCUTTA, India (Reuters) - A paratrooper in India bit off
part of a colleague's nose after an argument over switching off
    the light, police said Friday.
The two soldiers from India's Eastern Frontier Rifles were
alone in their barracks Wednesday night when Lance Corporal
Bhupesh Rava lost his cool because his roommate wanted the
lights on for a little while longer.
An enraged Rava, who had returned from daytime duty,
attacked Sepoy Durga Lama, pinned him down and gnawed off his
    nose, police said.
"People came to Lama's rescue after hearing his shouts for
help," said Ranvir Kumar, deputy commissioner of police.
Lama, bleeding profusely, was taken to hospital while his
attacker stood in a corner with bloody lips, he said.

    Red face

Well, Here's Your Trouble Right Here, Sir...
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Doctors found around 50 maggots in the
ears of an 84-year-old Thai man after he went to hospital
    complaining of an itch.
Wednesday's Nation newspaper said Anan Temtan, who lives in
the tsunami-hit southern resort island of Phuket, had used
cotton buds to relieve the itching, but had scratched so hard
his eardrums ruptured and started bleeding.
"We believe flies might have gone inside his ears to lay
eggs, which hatched into larvae and caused the itching," said
Somsak Nonthasri, the doctor who treated him.
Somsak, who used tweezers and a small suction device to
remove the maggots, said Anan would be kept in for observation
for a while to make sure no more eggs hatched.

DNA Reopens 32-Year-Old Serial Rapist Case
NEW YORK (Reuters) - DNA testing on semen found on a raped
woman's underwear 32 years ago has reopened an investigation
into 25 sexual assaults spanning three states over three
decades, Manhattan prosecutors said on Tuesday.
DNA testing of semen found on a victim's underwear in a
1973 Manhattan knifepoint rape was matched to Clarence
Williams, 58, who was arrested last year after a 26-year
hiatus, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.
"It ought to send a chill through a lot of defendants to
know after 32 years you can still test for DNA," Morgenthau
    told a news conference.
Williams was tried for the woman's rape in 1974, before DNA
testing was available, but the jury failed to reach a verdict.
A conviction from a second New York rape was overturned.
Prosecutors said they now have DNA evidence for that case too.
Released on bail, Williams disappeared in 1978.

Australian cemetery gets go ahead for vertical burials
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - An Australian company has been given
approval to begin work on a cemetery where bodies will be buried
vertically to save space and minimize impact on the environment, a
    spokesman said Thursday.
Tony Dupleix, director of Palacom, the company given permission
for the cemetery, said the plan would involve no-frills burials,
using a simple body bag rather than a casket.
"When you die, you are returned to the earth with a minimum of
fuss and with no paraphernalia that would affect the environment,"
    he said.
The cemetery, proposed for a field in Derrinallum, 180
kilometers (110 miles) west of the city of Melbourne, would feature
three-meter (10-foot) holes, Dupleix said. It reportedly is the
first cemetery in Australia offering the option of being buried
    standing up.
Anna Jamieson, of the Darlington Cemetery Trust which will
manage the cemetery, said the plots would be ideal for
environmentally minded people, but conceded it was unlikely to
    replace the time-honored horizontal interments.
"If you are interested in the environment, it's beautiful land
on the Western District plains facing Mount Elephant," she said.
"Some people will think it's great but other people might prefer a
    traditional burial."

UK industry counts cost of dog-loving Brits
LONDON, April 28 (Reuters) - Dog-loving Britons have taken
2.7 million working days off to care for their sick pets over
the last two years, according to a survey on Thursday.
Ten percent of owners missed five days of work, with half of
these taking up to two weeks off to look after their pets.
Britons are so concerned about their dogs' wellbeing that 55
percent admitted they paid more attention to sick pets than an
    ill partner.
Fifty-three percent of owners also said they bought their
dogs a present if their pets were feeling under the weather.
The survey, for Direct Line Pet Insurance, polled 750
    British dog owners.

Exploding toads in a Hamburg pond baffle scientists
BERLIN (AP) - More than 1,000 toads have puffed up and exploded
in a Hamburg pond in recent weeks, and German scientists still have
no explanation for what's causing the combustion, an official said
    Wednesday.
Both the pond's water and body parts of the toads have been
tested, but scientists have been unable to find a bacteria or virus
that would cause the toads to swell up and pop, said Janne
Kloepper, of the Hamburg-based Institute for Hygiene and the
    Environment.
"It's absolutely strange," she said. "We have a really unique
story here in Hamburg. This phenomenon really doesn't seem to have
    appeared anywhere before."
The toads at a pond in the upscale neighborhood of Altona have
been blowing up since the beginning of the month, filling up like
balloons until their stomachs suddenly burst.
"It looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie," Werner
Schmolnik, the head of a local environment group, told the
Hamburger Abendblatt daily. "The bloated animals suffer for
several minutes before they finally die."
Biologists have come up with several theories, but Kloepper said
that most have been ruled out.
The pond's water quality is no better or worse than other bodies
of water in Hamburg, the toads did not appear to have a disease,
and a laboratory in Berlin has ruled out the possibility that it is
a fungus that made its way from South America, she said.
She said that tests will continue. In the meantime, city
residents have been warned to stay away from the pond.
