*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

    JERSEY CITY, NJ
    GOLD COAST TOASTED!

One of the hottest real estate markets in the country became super hot on a sunny, hot Saturday afternoon, July 26, 2003. While on a fire prevention detail at a festival on Exchange Pl., Fire Prevention Bureau Car 61, Inspector Matthew Barrett, spotted heavy smoke in the vicinity of Grand and Washington Streets. As he radioed the alarm, the Fire Dispatch Center began receiving numerous calls reporting a fire at the Alexian Apartments, 100 Dudley St. at Washington St.

Box 114 and the Working Fire assignment were struck at 1410 hours. Batt. 1, B. C. Michael Blanchard and Eng. Co. 2 arrived simultaneously and reporting fire on all floors of a four story frame multiple dwelling. A 2nd Alarm was transmitted at 1414 hours.

The fire building is a block square apartment complex with underground parking bounded by Dudley, Washington, Essex and Warren Streets. Although the street side facades are brick, giving the appearance of surrounding century old townhouses in the historic Paulus Hook area, the buildings are actually frame construction, with all the ingredients of a firefighter's nightmare. The floor joists and roof system are constructed of lightweight wood trusses, the sheathing is particle board and the facade facing the interior courtyards are vinyl siding. With views of the Statue of Liberty and the skylines of Jersey City and New York from most windows, the apartments command monthly rents in excess of $1,500.00.

Repair work to the waterproofing of the building's foundation was in progress when the vinyl siding and sheathing of one section of the building ignited. Fire raced up all floors of the section, involving balconies of four apartments and extending into the interior on each floor. Thanks to William Parmalee (inventor of the automatic sprinkler) and the F.D.J.C., a full scale disaster was averted. Just as the fire started to extend into the cockloft, a well-positioned handline held the fire in check. Sprinklers activated on each floor, holding the fire in place until engine companies could move in with handlines to complete extinguishment.

Fortunately, no injuries occurred, despite the 90 degree temperature. Car 26, the Gong Club canteen, combatted heat exhaustion with Gatorade, bottled water, cold towels and a misting fan.
