move from UK to Canada

Hi,

Wondering if any of you out there would know what the possibility is for a possible move from the fire service here in the UK, to one in Canada?

Been in the job 6 years, with a few qualifications.

Any help greatfully recieved

Hi there from Canada,
Personally, I don't know the answers to your questions, but I do have a suggestion or two. Firstly, if you know the area you would be moving to, you could look up the city/town site on the internet. For example, doing a search for the city of Calgary, Alberta. Once you reach the site, they usually are broken down into job opportunities or qualifications for different departments. If I go to the city of Calgary site and look up emergency services, then down to fire and ems services, I can then look up and see what they require for qualifications and if they are recruiting or hiring. Most cities and towns usually have an email address as well and you can ask them your questions. Perhaps someone would be able to tell you the differences in training/requirements as compared to that you have received in the UK. I know from personal experience, that career fire departments have an application process and a minimum requirement section that a person must meet before going further. cowboy, we do not have the same national fire dept system as you do in the UK, as such each jurisdiction has its own criteria, most Depts are run by the cities they serve, many (but not all) demand that potential recruits attend Provincial Fire Schools, of course experience will tend to count toward employment, but to leave a position over there and come here hoping to gain employment would be in my opinion quite a risk.I'm not trying to discourage you, but you are aware we haver this little thing over here called WINTER, right?

Yeah I heard about that little thing, something to do with lying on sunbeds all day topping up your tan isnt it?

Not quite as extreme, but Im from N.Ireland which can be pretty bad at times

OK, LOL Best of luck Brother, If I were you I would concentrate my search on Ontario and westward, hireings here in eastern Canada tend to be fewer and slightly lower paid. Our Dept has members that have been part time for over 5 years.
