*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Thursday, August 07, 2003 at 0250 Hours (2:50 AM PDT), thirteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, three Chief Officer Command Teams and various support Units, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Roxanne Bercik responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 8140 South Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles. The first units, dispatched to a reported rubbish fire, instead encountered heavy smoke showing to the rear of a one-story 50’ x 100’ commercial structure. Forcible entry was skillfully accomplished and the building laddered, allowing rooftop Firefighters to aggressively and accurately ventilate heat and smoke from within the building. Additional teams of Firefighters were initially hampered in their efforts to extend hoselines within the building due to very heavy storage. A two-tiered effort to flank the flames within the structure subsequently proved successful, with Firefighters confining the blaze to the building of origin and its heavy load of combustible contents. The fire was extinguished in just 36 minutes and there were no injuries. A man and a woman who had taken temporary residence in the building were referred to the American Red Cross for placement assistance. Loss is still being tabulated, while the cause remains categorized as suspicious and under active investigation.
