*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

Breaking News - Urban Wildfire, Carnation WA

21 August 03

5PM Seattle

Another urban-interface wildfire in progress. This time in Carnation WA. The firefighters have been battling this for the past 90 minutes, and it's still going strong.

Carnation is about 20 miles due east from Seattle. And is within King Cty. Mutual aid fire crews are enroute from throughout King and Snohomish Cty's. Including a task force from Seattle Fire Dept.

A little background of King Cty., the county covers approximately 2000 square miles. West to East, from Puget Sound (Seattle) into the Cascade Mountains, about 50 miles East.

We have been having an unusually warm and dry summer, over 50 days, at or near 80 degrees. And less than 2 tenths of rain in most places.

There was another urban-interface fire just a few hours earlier in Bothell, along I-405 north of Hwy. 527.

And on Tuesday, another urban-interface fire in Shoreline, (First city north of Seattle.) involving about 1/4 mile of brush and trees along a high tension power line right of way, and comunicated to out buildings, yards, and singed a number of houses.

Mutual aid fire companies responded from North West King Cty., South West Snohomish Cty. and Seattle.

And these are the larger fires that have happened in the last few days. We have had numerous brush fires along the highways, sometimes 1 to 2 a day.

Breaking News - Seattle 4th Alarm Warehouse Fire

21 Aug 03

Seattle, WA

At about 830 PM Seattle Fire companies were dispatched to Dexter Ave. & John St. for a fire in a building.

KOMO 4 news chopper broke the story as they were returning to Seattle from the Carnation fire.

First arriving companies found heavy fire at a loading dock area involving several vehicles. Shortly thereafter, the decision was made for an exterior attack. A short time after that, fire exploded through the roof.

By 10PM the roof had completely collapsed. Also the Seattle Fire Dept. task force that had gone to the urban-interface wildfire in Carnation had returned to service in the city.

At the peak of the this warehouse fire, there were at least 15 master streams in operation. A combination of ladder pipes, deck guns, portable monitors, and hand lines.

Helping Our Own

"firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.

Please check out the following website - Maybe your FD can help out.
