Arson reported

The fire marshal in Atlantic Beach is investigating an arson after someone apparently attempted to set fire to a home in the 2000 block of Park Street early Monday morning.

The residents of the home were asleep inside when the rear of the building was ignited using some type of accelerant, said Atlantic Beach Deputy Police Chief John Campbell Tuesday. The incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., he said.

The fire did not spread and apparently extinguished naturally, damaging only the external rear of the home, said Campbell.

“Evidently, it just didn’t catch,” Campbell said.

A vehicle parked outside the front of the home was also sprayed with the accelerant but was not ignited, said Campbell. One of the windows to the vehicle was reported busted, he said.

Police have no suspects in the incident. Damage was not estimated.
