Home burned down by boy, 11

An 11-year-old Fort Lauderdale boy playing with matches burned down his family's home and sent a firefighter to the hospital with minor burns, fire officials said Saturday.

The Fort Lauderdale firefighter received burns to the back of his neck, said Division Chief Dennis Sheehan.

The boy was playing with matches in a bedroom around 9 a.m. Saturday at his home in the 1500 block of NW 15th Ct. The youngster dropped a lit match, and the fire quickly consumed the home, Sheehan said. The boy and his aunt were not able to put out the flames. Firefighters arrived and found heavy black smoke billowing from the home. They tried to extinguish the blaze but couldn't save the home.

The Red Cross placed the family of five in a motel for the night.

The youngster will have to attend a four-hour fire-safety class, Sheehan said.
