LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 0543 Hours (5:43 AM PDT), nine Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of 15th Battalion Commander Thomas Brennan responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 8627 North Wilbur Avenue in Northridge. The first Company arrived quickly to discover one unit of a two-story residential fourplex within a ten building complex well involved with fire. Prior to the Fire Department’s arrival, three adults and five children in the involved townhome were awakened by the sound of breaking glass to find the downstairs portion of their smoke alarm equipped but not fire sprinklered two-story residence charged with smoke. Though one of the five children, ranging in age from 1 to 17 years, was able to safely run through smoke and exit through a front door, the seven remaining occupants were trapped upstairs by the swift moving blaze, requiring them to jump or be lowered from second floor windows without injury prior to the arrival of rescuers. Firefighters used handlines to mount a brisk and well-coordinated attack on the flames, confining the fire to the townhome of origin and extinguishing the blaze in just 23 minutes. A sixty year-old female, identified as a visiting grandparent, later complained of chest discomfort and was transported to an area hospital in fair condition. There were no other injuries. Loss from the fire is estimated $250,000 ($200,000 structure & $50,000 contents). The mother, her four boys and one girl are receiving placement assistance from the American Red Cross, while her male companion and visiting mother will seek their own accommodations. The cause of this blaze remains under active investigation.
