I am posting this message to let you know that the Assistant Chief of Administration, Harry Zilkan, for the Newberry Springs Fire Department passed away September 10, 2003, from heart failure. This was a service connected disability, and service connected death. FEMA has released a notification of Firefighter Fatality. All information contained within is correct, with the following exception:

Chief Zilkan is survived by his wife, Beth, of Newberry Springs; daughter Lisa Schlehuber and her husband, Bart; son, Thare (T.J.) Zilkan, and his wife, Yvonne; daughter Lannette (Lani) Hollowell and husband Timothy; son Darin Scines; daughter Cinda Steinbeck and her husband, David; son Trevor Scines; granddaughters Anel Ochoa-Rodriguez and Amaya Zilkan; grandsons Alex and Jacob Schlehuber. Chief Zilkan is also survived by his sister Maryann Among, and brother Moki Among. Chief Zilkan's funeral service will be Saturday, September 13, 2003, at 1100 hours, at Mead's Mortuary in Barstow, CA.

His career spanned 37 years, starting in 1966 when he entered the United States Army. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant in May 1989. During his service to the Army, Chief Zilkan obtained three purple hearts, two silver stars and two bronze medals for three tours in Vietnam.

After his military service, he worked for DynCorp until 1996. He completed a degree at Barstow Community College, and took over ownership of Midas Muffler in Victorville, CA. in 2000.

Chief Zilkan was Worshipful Master of Barstow-Boron Masonic Lodge #282 F & AM in 1999. He was also to be Worthy Patron for Barstow Chapter 242, Order of the Eastern Star next year.
