Passing of Robert W. Fitz, September 15, 2003

It is with deep regret to inform everyone of the passing of Robert W. Fitz. Bob was a long time member on the International Fire Buffs Association. Bob passed away today September 15, 2003, at the hospital in New Hampshire after a long battle with cancer. Bob was a former Deputy Chief in Nashua, New Hampshire and formly worked for the Gamewell Fire Box Company, Bob assembled a huge collection of various fire boxes that were issued from the 1800 to the present day. Bob was also a Member of the Box 52 Association in Boston Mass.

Bob and I have been friends since our teenage days back in the 1950's. I first met Bob at the Fire Buffs Convention in 1958 that was held in Baltimore Md. Bob had attended just about every Fire Buffs Convention in the last five decades. My wife Pat and I drove up to New Hampshire a few weeks ago to visit Bob while he was in the hospital. He was hoping that he could make it to the Fire Buffs Convention in Milwaukee this year but he knew he couldn't and that his days were limited. With the start of the Convention tomorrow please have a Moment of Silence for this fine Buff and may he Rest In Peace.

From his old time friend, Bob Bartosz, Fire Photographer, Member of the South Jersey Fire Photographers Association. New Jersey.

*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

AUSTRAILIA
Major Fires Update - 1700 hours Monday 15 September

Over 400 firefighters from NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests and NSW Fire Brigades are working on more than 50 fires across NSW today, which have now burned about 25,000ha. More than 30 of the fires are in the Northern Tablelands and Northern Rivers areas while others affect the Hastings, Great Lakes and Lake Macquarie districts.

Strong winds continue to flare fires today making conditions difficult and stopping backburning on some fires.

A Section 44 `bushfire emergency' has been declared for the Tenterfield, Severn and Inverell Rural Fire Districts today with 17 fires, most burning in remote country, affecting these areas. The declaration will enable the RFS Commissioner to take charge of coordination of the fires and bring in resources from other areas to assist local agencies.

A Section 44 declaration already applies to Kyogle, Copmanhurst, Richmond Valley and Lismore Districts.

The Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service encouraged rural property owners in areas affected by fire to take precautions by preparing their homes.

He also asked landowners and managers to be particularly careful if considering hazard reduction or agricultural burns, even if total fire bans did not apply.

"We have a large number of fires in the north of NSW and we need to minimise the risk of further fires starting and taking resources away from the fires we are currently working on," Commissioner Koperberg said.

"Property owners should take note of weather forecasts, ensure they have adequate firefighting equipment available and check with their local RFS Fire Control Centre before doing any burning off"

Richmond Valley, Kyogle, Copmanhurst, Lismore Section 44

Warm temperatures and gusty conditions caused some flare ups across firegrounds but no major fire runs. There are 15 fires burning across these four districts.

Five aircraft are working in the area, with waterbombing particularly on the Clarks Fire on the Lismore/Kyogle border.

A total fire ban has been declared for the Northern Rivers weather district tomorrow.

Tenterfield, Inverell, Severn

There are currently 19 fires affecting the area, most burning in remote country and not affecting property.Winds fanned fire activity, particularly on the Bebo, Oaks and Campoompeta fires.

A total fire ban has been declared for the Northern Tablelands weather district tomorrow.

Lake Macquarie

A fire at Mount Sugarloaf has continued to burn with squally winds and is now about 90ha but is not causing major problems. No properties are threatened and NSW Fire Brigades appliances protected the communications towers at the top of the mountain.

Winds made backburning impossible through the day and burns will be considered with the weather permits. About 20 RFS and NSW Fire Brigades personnel are working in the area.
