Sixty fires affecting NSW
Firefighters experienced blustery conditions on more than 60 fires across NSW, mostly in the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast.
Winds gusted to 50k/h creating difficult firefighting conditions and prevented backburning in some areas.
More than 400 firefighters from NSW Rural Fire Service, National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests and NSW Fire Brigades were working today.
The winds caused fires to flare up this afternoon. The fires are generally in remote and inaccessible areas, so no properties are under direct threat at this time. Property protection measures are in place for some isolated rural homes.
About 30,000ha has been affected, mostly in the Northern Tablelands.
Additional crews are being assembled to assist in Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands.
NORTHERN RIVERS - Kyogle, Copmanhurst, Richmond Valley, Lismore
Firefighters have continued to work hard in difficult, windy conditions, which have prevented backburning. They have been constructing containment lines by hand in rough and rugged country using hand tools - which is backbreaking work. Bulldozers are also grading containment lines.
About 6500ha has been burnt by 15 fires in remote country, mostly in Kyogle and Copmanhurst. Clark Creek, Mt Neville, Camira and Phillips Creek fires are main fires of concern. Additional firefighters from Far North Coast are now working in the area.
Winds gusting to 50k/h caused fires to flare, particularly on Clarks and Roseberry fires. Crews and aircraft worked in the area.
Although properties are not under direct threat property owners are asked to prepare by clearing combustible material from structures to protect homes and enable access by fire tankers if necessary.
Forecast weather is for a change to easterly winds on Friday which may enable backburning to be done. Bulldozing and manual work to establish containment lines continues.
Fire permits are not being issued for some of these areas. People wanting to conduct agricultural, hazard reduction or other burns should contact their local fire control centre for advice.
Investigations are being conducted into a number of these fires to establish their cause and origin.
