Media Release: NSW Coronial Inquiry into the Brindabella Range bushfires
Thursday September 18, 2003
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) today welcomed the findings of the NSW Coronial Inquiry into the Brindabella Range bushfires of January this year.
The decision by fire fighting authorities to place the safety of firefighters first in the initial attack of the Mclntryre's Hut fire was supported by the NSW Coroner. who presented his findings in Queanbeyan this afternoon.
NPWS Director-General, Mr Brian Gilligan and the Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service, Mr Phil Koperberg noted that the Coroner found that local fire fighting authorities made the right decisions at the time given the information available to them.
"On behalf of all the hard-working men and women.who fought the fires, we welcome the Coroners commendation of their efforts during the January bushfires." they said.
Mr Gilligan also welcomed the Coroners acknowledgement of the complexity of fuel management in the Brindabella district.
"ln the Alpine environment, such as much of Brindabella and Kosciusko National Parks, the areas of highest fuel are subject to snow and ice during winter and often only dry out in extremely hot conditions when it is too dangerous to attempt a controlled burn," Mr Gilligan said.
Mr Gilligan said NPWS remained strongly committed to hazard reduction, subject to weather, and has already completed 145 prescribed burns since January 1 this year.
Commissioner Koperberg said the lives of our fire fighters must be the priority.
"This consideration was at the heart of our decision on January 8 not to send fire fighters in to a situation we strongly believed was extremely dangerous.
"The evidence presented to this inquiry overwhelmingly supports our contention that to have sent fire fighters in the Mcintyre's Hut fire would have been very risky and would not have changed the situation on the day nor the end result," the Commissioner said,
Mr Koperberg and Mr Gilligan said there were lessons to be learned from every fire season,
They said NPWS and the RFS are working to implement the recommendations of the NSW Joint Select Committee on the 2001/2002 Bushfires
The Coroner also highlighted the importance of collaborative firefighting. This is something all NSW Government agencies fully support and we continue to improve cross-agency and community co-operation.
"Those who fought this fire and especially those who made the crucial decisions about when and where to send in fire fighters will be particularly pleased that their decisions have been supported"
