It was interesting to see how FF/Emtps were staffed across the country in that previous thread. Now I'm curious how emtp bonuses work in other places. Do you get a bonus for being a medic, or do you only get a bonus if you work as a medic? Do you get a daily upgrade each time you work on a box, or do you get nothing at all?
Seems like most places around here give medics extra pay regardless of whether they work on an ambulance or not (which is fine by me).

It is my understanding that most departments pay more per hour for a paramedic, though my part time department gives an incentive check every December for every certification one holds: EMT, Intermediate, Paramedic, Associates, Bachelors, and so forth.~Kevin

Not here, there is no extra salary for any of the volunteer "extras"

Yep, I get to look forward to getting an extra $.43 an hour to be a medic . And an intermediate gets $.35 more an hour.AKA: Mr. Whoo-Whoo

Two places I have worked:
Houston Fire Department: $2800/yr, I think I remember correctly.
Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department: about $3800/yr
Those both are to be a practicing paramedic counted in staffing as such. Not just certified and not utilized.Member IACOJ - Building crust and full of lust...

My department pays 5% for Intermediate and 10% for paramedic. That translates to about $1,500 and $3,000 added to your salary.

EMT incentives are almost the rule, and not the exception in Oregon. My department pays 4% for EMT-I, and 7% for EMT-P. This is based on the individuals salary. Prepping for negotiations, I've noticed that EMT-P incentives typically range between 6%-12% of salary, and typically (but not always) apply whether assigned to medic or not.

We get paid a certain amount for each level, can't remember the pay steps, but EMT-B is 50 dollars a month. We also get paid for each level of fire cert from basic, interm, advanced, master, with pay steps as well. I think basic is about 30 maybe more. I actually need to send my paperwork off so that I can start getting my advanced.. I'm loosing money!
We get those rates just for having the certs, we don't "ride the box" in my Dept at all. In my Dept, when you promote to engineer, they can pull you into a paramedic class (you can choose not go, but don't get promoted). Once you leave EMT-P school, you are assigned to a box... the only way to get out is to either promote to LT., or write a letter and hope like heck that they let you out. A lot of guys stay because they get more overtime in EMS, and they get an extra day off too. There are a lot of times too that they don't need a class, and you just slip on through and end up driving for a company. Once that happens you usually get through wihtout getting pulled into EMS, but there have been times that they have gona back and snagged people for the paramedic class. Your not really safe until they have had another test and promoted from it.
In fire, we all get paid every time we "step up". If I drive a shift, then I make acting engineer pay. Same goes for the engineer if he works as acting LT. etc. The only pay we receive in percentage amounts are for longevitey.
An asociates degree will score you around 150 or so a month, and a bach around 225 or so.http://www.sanantoniofire.org

Assigned medics get a 15% differential(about $5500 for me this year).
Most days are spent on the rescue with some rotation onto an engine.

Here in Solon, Ohio we get $1500/year. Divided in 26 equal instalments. I am looking into info on making it a percentage of base salary, to avoid having to negotiate for it every three years.Marc S.

We prefer negotiating it every 3 years, because it seems to be steadily rising anyways. We've looked at our options and it seems to work best for us to get two checks a year for half our bonus.

My thinking is that if the bonus is a pecentage of base salary, then every three years when you negotiate salary increases, you automaticaly get a medic bonus increase. One less thing you have to ask the city for.Marc S.

Like ff7134, I look forward to my HUGE extra $.82/ hour. In my department a paramedic receives 5% extra. For me that amounts to about $2300/ year.
In our department the chiefs have a proposal before the commission. It will give everyone below the rank of FireEngineer a 10% bonus for year 1, and 5% more every year for three years giving them a 25% bonus. That means a Firemedic who now makes the same as a driver would make Captains pay. I really hope they like riding the bus, because I'm not gonna do it if I'm not payed for it.

Regardless of if we are assigned to a rescue or an engine, we DID get $45 per week to hold a medic license. The last contract that was just ratified brought the medic pay down to $25 per week. We've been told "It's been added into your base pay). Which is actually true. Except that I continue to perform 3 times the call volume than other non-medics who make a scant $25 less per week.

At my department, anyone that is certified as a medic makes an extra 5%. It is an incentive to maintain the certification if you are an officer, engineer or un-promoted medic. To be a promoted medic, there has to be an opening and you just have to be off probation. Promoted medics make more than $60K. That's more money than engineers make and almost as much as officers. It really ****es off all of those old timers.
