LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY BRUSH FIRE:

On Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 0909 Hours (9:09 AM PDT), sixteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Helicopters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and various LAFD support units, accompanied by ground resources from the Glendale Fire Department, as well as ground and air resources from the US Forest Service and Los Angeles County Fire Department, all under the direction of LAFD Assistant Chief Greg West responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire adjacent to the “eastbound” lanes of SR-210 (Foothill Freeway) “east” of Sunland Boulevard in Sunland. The first Company to arrive reported a half-acre of grass and medium-to-heavy brush burning alongside the western edge of the freeway. Well-coordinated command of ground crews, combined with precise water drops from the half-dozen helicopters in a period of minimal winds allowed Firefighters to navigate the steep terrain and confine the main body of fire and a nearby spot blaze to just three acres of vegetation. Traffic control and freeway lane closure assistance from the California Highway Patrol allowed Firefighters to work unhindered alongside the at-times busy freeway until extinguishment was attained in just 83 minutes. One adult male inmate fire suppression worker from a Los Angeles County Fire Department handcrew sustained an ankle injury when he toppled down a steep hilliside. In fair condition, he was provided with medical attention at the direction of that agency. No structures were threatened or damaged by the fire. The cause of the blaze is categorized as suspicious and remains under active investigation.
