New South Wales, AUSTRALIA

Thursday 25/9/03

Hawkesbury - Upper Colo

60Ha bushfire. Currently contained between Putty Road, East of Mailies Fire Trial and South of Color River. 12 tankers, 70 personnel from Rural Fire Service

Wyong - Mangrove Mountain

300Ha bushfire. Being controlled. A Section 44 ``bushfire emergency’’ was declared on Thursday, 25/9. Fire started 24.9.03. Burning between Central Mangrove and Jilliby Nature Reserve. More than 70 firefighters and 6 helicopters are working on containment lines in the area. Helicopter waterbombing slowing progress of the head of the fire Ground crews and dozers working on containment lines.

Gosford

Gosford Interchange - About 140 firefighters from Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire Brigades attended a bushfire that started on the western side of the F3 Freeway. Fire encroached on the Somersby Industrial Estate and damaged the stockyard of a landscaping business. The F3 closed briefly. Fire being controlled.

Katoomba

Katoomba tip – 20 tankers and pumpers, about 75 firefighters from RFS and NSW Fire Brigades continue putting water on the fire. Firefighters have contained the fire but there are still concerns that strong winds could cause it to spread to bushland. The fire probably started by self-combustion but investigations will be held to determine cause and origin. Firefighters using breathing apparatus to work in the area.

AUSTRAILIA
CONTAINMENT CONTINUED WHILE NEW FIRES STARTED

More than 600 firefighters continued to battle over 65 fires in NSW, generally in the Northern Tablelands, Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast.

New outbreaks were tackled in Katoomba, Gosford, Eurobodalla and Bega while a Section 44 `bushfire emergency' was declared for Wyong district which has a fire around Mangrove Mt.

Most fires are contained and being patrolled with no direct threats to property.

About 57,000 ha has been burnt over the past fortnight.

The first new outbreak today was reported at 5am at Katoomba Tip which was contained in difficult winds. Crews will remain on site tonight to ensure the fire doesn't spot into bushland.

Of most concern today was a fire in the Gosford district near the Somersby interchange. The fire started on the western side of the F3 and spot over to the eastern side. The fire encroached on the Somersby Industrial Estate and a landscaping supply stockyard was burned. Backburning behind industrial properties will be conducted tonight.

New fires were also reported in Campbelltown, Singleton and Hawkesbury.

Total fire bans apply to Hunter and Metropolitan areas tomorrow (Friday). Please contact your local Fire Control Centre for advice if you wish to light a fire in any other weather districts.
