LOS ANGELES, CA:
CHEMICAL INCIDENT:

On Thursday, October 02, 2003, at 0844 hours (8:44 A.M.) seven companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, six LAFD Rescue Ambulances, three Battalion Command Teams, two EMS Battalion District Captains, one Hazardous Materials Squad, and other support units, under the direction of Assistant Chief Lawrence J. Krokes, responded to a Chemical incident at 13031 West Jefferson Boulevard in the Westchester area. First units on the scene reported a large number of people standing outside of the U.S. Postal building, eight of which were complaining of watery eyes, nausea and throat irritation. Initial reports indicated that a noxious odor had originated in the maintenance area of the Post Office. After a thorough investigation by Firefighters and the Los Angeles County Health Department, no hazardous chemical or chemical smell could be detected. Eight employees were assessed and four were transported to area hospitals (1 serious and 4 minor injuries). Firefighters were able to ascertain that the odor originated from an overheated “large copy machine and the toner”. Receiving hospitals were: St. John’s, Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center and Brotman Medical Center. The incident was turned over to the Los Angeles County Health Department for further investigation.
