LOS ANGELES, CA
MULTI-PATIENT TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH CIVILIAN FATALITY AND ENTRAPMENT:
On Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 1416 Hours (2:16 PM PDT), seven Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, eleven LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two LAFD Helicopters, one LAFD USAR and Heavy Rescue Company, two LAFD EMS Battalion Captains and two LAFD Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Dean Cathey responded to a Multi-Patient Traffic Collision with Civilian Fatality and Entrapment at the intersection of Hayvenhurst Avenue and Nordhoff Street in North Hills. According to witnesses, a compact pickup truck driven by an elderly male was traveling eastbound when it collided with a full-size passenger van full of developmentally disabled adults traveling northbound. The collision caused the passenger van to spin around and overturn onto its left side, coming to rest against the hood of a marked LAPD patrol unit that was moving slowly or stopped in the westbound lanes. At least one occupant of the van was ejected, while another was trapped in the wreckage. While Firefighters worked to free the trapped victim, triage was established on the northeast corner of the intersection. Firefighters went to great lengths to offer personal comfort and reassurance to many patients with special needs. One adult male van occupant was later declared deceased at the scene. A total of fourteen injured adults, including two Police Officers with minor injuries, were treated and transported to regional hospitals, including two civilians with critical injuries who were airlifted to the LAC-USC Medical Center by a pair of LAFD helicopters. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will identify the deceased as well as determine the cause and manner of death. The Los Angeles Police Department is handling a formal investigation of the collision.
