Hypothetical situation: Your Chief of your cities fire dept. which has a Proclamation declaring a day each year as a day to honor fallen members of the Dept. This year the day falls on the same day as the physical agility test for new hires and at the same time. Which should you attend as Chief of the Dept.? You had ample notice of each event prior to the day of occurence. Clarificatioin: All memebers of the Dept. have the opprotunity to attend the Memorial. Also the test is ran by an outside agency, not the firefighters.

I would go to the memorial. A phys test should not be a hi priority for a chief. Sure it's nice for him to be interested, but there's time to get to know the applicants later. Besides, the only important ones are the ones who pass the test... and if they get far enough, he'll see em sooner or later.

Who's running your test? I agree with 33, there is no need for a chief to attend the physical; however, what about the guys running the test? If they are off-duty guys, wouldn't they rather go to the memorial? Would it hurt to postpone the test one week? Probably not....

If there was ample notice as indicated, the Testing should have been rescheduled.
Jay is right, all members of the department should be given the opportunity to attend the memorial, not just the Chief!September 11th - Never Forget

why choose one over the other, if he can delay the test he should be cause he could go to both.

Good point jaybird. When I took the test for SAFD, back then it was pretty much given by the PD trainers from thier academy, so I was still thinking along those lines. Nowadays I'm pretty sure it's 100% off duty FD who conduct it.however, what about the guys running the test? If they are off-duty guys, wouldn't they rather go to the memorial?

Duh........
GO TO THE MEMORIAL! Your departed brothers and sisters have earned it, the new hires have a while to go. And, I might add, take the appropriate steps to see that there are no future scheduling foulups. Memorial day is just that. There are 364 other days to use for everything else. Stay Safe....

Thanks to those who replied. I saw the response that I expected.
Sadly, what really happened was that our Chief shunned the Memeorial and attended the Agility test. His actions were witnessed and noticed by everyone in attendance, active duty, retiree's, widows, and the Mayor.

I could go either way................delay the test and go to the memorial, or just plain ol' to the thing for the reasons Harve stated. Whats the Chief going to do @ the test? It isnt like he can hand pick those he wants after they passs that part ...............right ?
