I'm still around. Been busier than a one armed man hanging wallpaper lately, recently engaged, moving my fiance down to the wonderful area known as Warren County from Rockford.
I'll try to pick up the pace.

Still here in Sandoval. Just reading the posts, keeping a low profile and learning. Anyone take the new 1 day response to terrorism course given by IFSI yet? Took it a couple of weeks ago in Centralia. Lot of good info although not sure what a small department with limited terrorist response resources and equipment could do besides recongnize and isolate an incident and call in the big dogs. The instructor, Nancy Mason, had a lot of good scenarios and case histories that really made you sit up and think twice. She was up front and honest about the role of small departments though. Said there wouldn't be a whole lot of money coming down the pipeline to small departments for terrorist response and that it would go to several regional designations throughout the state. Anyone else heard this? Also, said that as of Jan 2004 that the class would be required for acceptance to FFIII class.

Mike:
You took the words right out of my mouth! Been kinda slow here for the past month or so. I figured that once the crappy weather sets in, everyone will grab a hot drink and sit down in front of the computer again.
kprsn:
We started a county Specialized Interagency Response Team two years ago. We had to fight the county board for $2000 to get it started!
Well, I found out today that the team is going to receive grants totally $400,000 for additional training and equipment. We were #4 in the top 10 in the state. Is that cool or what? While some were scrambling to get something on the board in the hopes of getting money, our team was training, going to Springfield lobbying for funding and working our tails off to get our group prepared for domestic threats. This will be a big shot in the arm for our local DP efforts. Hang in there. I want to think that funding is on the way.
For the rest of you; come on. Make some noise.

CR, as I understand it our Southern Illinois Fire Chiefs Association has applied for a grant to establish a regional haz mat response team and that it has been viewed favorably. I believe that Centralia City Chief Thouvenin is one of those heading up that request and he has said that it looks good. Jack might be able to give me a little more isight into that. Jack, what have you heard?

Chad, it is MABAS Divison 47 that is actively seeking funding. Our application is in and we do have a good chance, but only as a group. Depts in the division are encouraged to get some of their people trained through the division. That's where the money will be going - the regional groups like MABAS. I hope some of our guys can get ops training, even though we'll have to rely on MABAS for equipment.
It's kind of bad for us though in that our division is in 3 different regions for the needs assessment that is going on. Here in Washington County, no dept. has been contacted to fill out the survey, while in Marion County, Bill is doing a bang-up job making sure every dept. is included. We're in an area with the MetroEast and they don't give a hoot what the Ashley Fire District has to say. I don't know who made up the boundaries, but they sure messed us up.Jack Boczek, Chief

Thanks for the info Jack. Does sound like they made it a little difficult for you guys. Retired Chief Somers still involved with the MABAS grant request? He always seems to find a way to get funding.
