Five whites sue Boston over hiring policies
(Boston-AP) -- Five white Boston men passed over for firefighter
jobs in favor of minorities are suing the city in federal court.
Thomas Flaherty, Kevin Williams, Edward Ferent, Edward Walsh and
Richard Proia all scored 99 out of 100 on the April 2000 civil
service exam, but were bypassed for minority hires with lower
scores. They are the first in a string of firefighter candidates
expected to demand jobs in the wake of an appeals court decision
last March.
That decision found the city has achieved racial balance for
entry-level firefighters, and the city's current hiring policy is
unconstitutional.
Lawyers for the N-double-A-C-P say the upper ranks of Boston
firefighters remain predominantly white, with only about six
percent minority.
The mayor's office says it has not yet received the lawsuit,
which was filed Friday.
