Matt Brimer- LODD Weaver Vol. Fire Dept.
Young firefighter who died in service is buried by colleagues
(Anniston-AP) -- Matt Brimer, an 18-year-old who this year
fulfilled his dream of being a firefighter was laid to rest
yesterday. Dozens of firefighters from surrounding communities
attended the funeral.
Brimer, a member of the Weaver volunteer fire department since
May, died Saturday when his car slid off a road on the way to what
turned out to be a false alarm.
Brimer, who as a young boy always asked for a toy fire truck
each Christmas, was carried in a silver coffin atop the hose bed of
a bright red fire engine.
Fire trucks from Birmingham to Vestavia Hills idled outside
Brimer's funeral service at Gladeview Baptist Church in Anniston.
In tribute to Brimer, Weaver firefighters have taken Brimer's
radio call number -- 2320 -- permanently out of service.
At the graveside, firefighters, police officers and emergency
medical technicians stood in silence as a small bell rang five
times in a series of four -- the traditional code for a fallen
