    On Sunday, November 16, 2003, at 0630 hours (6:30 a.m.) nine companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two Battalion Command Officer Teams, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, and five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, under the direction of Battalion Commander Daren M. Palacios, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 3455 S. West Boulevard in the Baldwin Hills area. First units on the scene reported a two-story 4-plex with fire and heavy smoke showing from the second floor. Firefighters using handlines aggressively attacked the fire confining it to one unit on the second floor with some water damage on the first floor. As a result of the fire, six injuries were reported, five minor (smoke inhalation) injuries and one moderate (burns to one arm and face) injury. Receiving hospitals were: Brotman Medical Center, Kaiser – West Los Angeles, and Midway Medical Center. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as combustibles too close to a space heater. Seven occupants from the involved unit were displaced. Fire damage is estimated at $35,000 ($20,000 structure and $15,000 contents).

    On Sunday, November 16, 2003, at 1908 hours (7:08 p.m.) twenty-two companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four Battalion Command Officer Teams, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, and five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, under the direction of Assistant Chief John Ware, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 1000 East Olympic Boulevard in the Central City area. First units on the scene reported a 100’ x 150’, one-story commercial building well involved with fire. Confronted with a large volume of fire upon arrival, firefighters immediately took up a defensive position on the exterior of the building using master stream appliances to extinguish the bulk of the fire. After this phase of firefighting was accomplished, firefighters using handlines entered the structure to complete extinguishment of the fire. The fire was confined to “FIA International Fabric Import & Domestic” and extinguished in thirty-four minutes. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as suspicious/investigation. Fire damage is estimated at $215,000 ($200,000 structure and $15,000 contents).
