    Default nothing against the cops...but

Heard a local county deputy on the radio this morning asking "Which fire department is responding". Well, I woke up the rest of the way then to find out there was a "major" natural gas leak on the north central end of the county. After that, the dispatcher paged the fire department to respond to a natural gas leak at a house address (send the cop first, don't worry about paging the fire department. The deputy told dispatch that it was "a code 3", she didn't recognize the smell, needed to notify residents 1 mile or maybe 2 miles around, called for the ESDA coordinator, 2 more deputies, the state police, the sheriff (like he was getting out of bed at 5:00 AM), block the highway at both ends, call the pipeline company to turn off the line, etc., etc.. FD gets there, turns off the valve on the farm tap and the whole thing was over. Seems a tree limb fell on a natural gas farm tap and broke off a pipe. They turned off the valve and it quit leaking. How about that. It was raining and the wind was blowing about 15 mph. Me thinks the cop needs some education about gas systems.

All cops should have Haz Mat Awareness. Just my opinion.

Sounds like your county has the same problem mine does: they call the cops out first to ANYTHING to "check it out first." Hmmm.

    ROFLMAO...and not at the cop!

Bored here at lunch, I decide to "Mapquest" DuBois, IL to figure what part of the state jboczeck is in.

You might be rural if Mapquest uses, "Dubois Blacktop Road" as one of the major streets!

Back when I was in my Firefighter II Academy at IFSI, a bunch of people in my class were griping about the dryness and boring content of our HAZMAT Awareness classwork. The response we got-

This has to be dumbed down. The cops have to take this.

    Default Yeah, we're rural

Dal, we're about as rural as rural can get. BUT.....I happen to live on West Broadway Street. Every big city has a Broadway street and us rural people do, too.

Default All right ! ALL RIGHT!! Break it up!! Big Spoon reporting as ordered.

    Hinckley Blacktop-- check.

Broadway.... nope. Got a Belmont Street though. Not quite as celebrated as Chicago's.

    Stephan, thanks for being sergeant-at-arms.

Let's have a little docrum in here now, please.

    Thank you.

    ----------------

By the way, in case any of you other interlopers decide to start self-promoting to Honorary Flatlander Status, let me point out a new rule effective September 1, 2003. I am the IACOJ-IL Chapter prez (per CR), and I can make retro-active rules. To wit, Section 3, Paragraph 4, Subsection G:

"In order for an interloper from another state to qualify for Honorary Flatlander status, the following conditions must be met:

    i. Said loper must make application through a thread of appropriate nature in
    Illinois Forums;

    ii. Said loper must seek and gain approval of at least three sponsors of native derivation;

iii. Said loper must have visited this state at least
ONCE in person and in the flesh, and been witnessed by at least one of the said sponsors."

    -----------------------

That should clear things up. To my knowledge, the only persons who met these criteria are weruj1 and Wayne18whatever.

There are no Honorary Flatlanders of Canadian origin. Despite what pc might have said.

    Thank you.

Well well well FINE Jay. ............ I can abide by your rules, so no honorary for me ........ but PCFD, I'm a FAR bigger person than these jackalopes and you are more than welcome to keep your "past honorary WOT" position, I most certainly don't have an issue with it.

    Have a lovely day, FLATLANDERS

    No, Jenn, I meant docrum.

Docrum (doe-crum')- 1. the product left over from making cookies, i.e. cookie dough; particularly in a crumbly form.

    2. slang:small, round, fuzz-like filimentious fibers removed from a female deer, as during the rutting season.

    3. bastardization of the phrase: "Doc Rum;" used to describe doctors who appear or act under the influence of alcohol, particularly rum.

c.f. Olde english, doeghcrume, meaning, leftovers.

At least we know how to spell my name

Ya know, I looked 10 times before I figured it out...

jboczeck -- whoops, just enough Poles out in this neck of the woods I'm used to lots of superflous constants in names...one of our members we routinely only use the first four letters (which includes 2 Zs) since no one can remember how to spell the rest.

For the record, I have been to Illinois. Of course, it was a red-eye in, red-eye out and I was too tired in between to get to much anywhere other than class and the hotel room!

some people down this way think your end of the state "rural" they need to drive through illinois sometime

    Hey, we have still:
A couple miles of gravel roads.
A few dozen trailers, some double-wides even.
One farm still shipping milk. (Had four dairies plus a dozen full-time poultry farms when I was in High School).

First Selectmen refers anyone who wants the roads paved to the church across the street, but a couple more decades and we'll have the rest of the trailers burned out of town at the rate we've been going. Guess for Connecticut "rural" means you still have some dirt roads, but god forbid you have housing under $100,000.

Love my town, but I can tell change is in the air as we're really getting under pressure as a suburb of Providence and Pfizer & Casinos to our south and metro Boston is starting to set it sights on "The Last Green Valley" as the last bastion of sub-quarter-million dollar suburban housing within an hour of Framingham. Starting to think in 20 years I might be tempted to sell my house for a nice profit and find some rural place to start over in!

Mikey, I, and I believe the rest of us here, live in Illinois while you live in the lesser state of Chicago and Cook County. Therefore, you have the right to make your own rules. However, while you're in the Illinois forum, you need to abide by our president's rules. Right, Jay?
