E.H. Kureczka Jr. Dies; Fire Lieutenant Was 46
    November 19, 2003
By MATT BURGARD, Courant Staff Writer

Edmond H. Kureczka Jr., a popular and widely respected Hartford Fire Department lieutenant, died Sunday of a heart attack at his home in Hebron, sending shock waves of grief among his comrades.

"I can't tell you how much I'm going to miss this guy, how much we're all going to miss him," Fire Chief Charles A. Teale Sr. said. "It has left us all completely devastated."

Kureczka, 46, a married father of two children and the son of Hartford Deputy Fire Chief Edmond H. Kureczka Sr., also was vice president of the local firefighters' union. But even in the most intense labor negotiations, Teale said, he never became antagonistic.

"He was always extremely respectful, extremely dignified," Teale said. "This is a nightmare, not only for us, but especially for his family."

In his 22 years in the department, Kureczka rose to the rank of lieutenant of the Tactical One Unit, stationed at department headquarters. Teale said Kureczka was respected for his leadership skills, and for his vast knowledge of tactics and regulations.

"He was an excellent man in every sense of the word," he said.

So many firefighters are expected to attend Kureczka's funeral Thursday that the department has arranged for mutual aid assistance from surrounding departments to help in the event of an emergency during the services, officials said. The funeral is at 9:15 a.m. from Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, to St. Augustine Church, 10 Campfield Ave., Hartford, at 10 for a Mass. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Calling hours are today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

    InAndUp, thanks for the update.

A FF from Hartford told me that they were considering a LODD, but I wasn't sure if that was just Hartford or the IAFF or whomever.
