UPDATED: 11:21 a.m. EST November 21, 2003
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A suspected arsonist reportedly jumped through a plate-glass window while his body was on fire, then fled the scene before police caught up with him Friday morning.
Alleged Arsonist Badly Burned
Police told NewsChannel 4's Jesse Abdenour that the scene resembled a movie stunt when they arrived at a car detail shop, located at North 11th Street and Jefferson. According to police, the man set the fire inside the shop, jumped through the window while his body was on fire from the chest down, and ran north on Kingry Street. The man reportedly used some kind of flammable liquid that started the blaze at around 3 a.m., but police said they were not sure of the substance. According to officers at the scene, the man reportedly came into contact with the substance and he caught fire. The unidentified man suffered burns and was transported to The Ohio State University Medical Center in critical condition. Fire officials told Abdenour that the building exploded and caught fire quickly.
SLIDESHOW: Images From Scene
"We have glass all the way around the property," said Columbus fire battalion chief Kevin O'Connor. "(It) looks like when the place lit off, there was probably an explosion that blew up the building." Fire officials said that are not sure why the fire was started, but said it looked suspicious. Arson investigators were investigating.
Damage was estimated at $50,000.

LOL...I'm imagining the thoughts in the cop responding,
"Hmmm, man running down street, on fire. I bet that's our guy!"

You laugh. I investigated a diner fire a couple of years ago and that is exactly what the first 911 caller reported... a man running down the street on fire.Originally posted by Dalmatian90

-Mistakes: It could be that the purpose of you life is to serve as a warning to others.
-Adversity: That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
-Despair: Its always darkest before it goes Pitch Black.

I'm imagining the modern-day U.S. court room now...
"Officer Wendt, so it's your theory that because my client was seen running down the street, on fire, in proximity the fire you investigated he was somehow involved?"
"Yes."

Yeah. But it sure helped that his wallet was found at the side door to the diner and every article of clothing he had on came back positive for gasoline (Sorry Kiwi...petrol)Originally posted by Dalmatian90
