    *** LANCASTER, MA *** LODD

This morning, Saturday, Novermber 29th, 2033 a Lancaster, MA Firefighter died in the Line-of-Duty.

Thus far, we know there was a farmhouse basement fire around 0500 hours. As the fire conditions worsened, the crews changed from an offensive to a defensive position and performed a roll call. It was determined that one Firefighter was missing. Crews re-entered the building, but only found his helmet. Later in the AM, after the fire was knocked down his body was found.

Two other Firefighters were reported to have received non-life threatening burn injuries.

No other details available at this time.

God Bless, Stay Safe and Keep the Faith!

    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    HILLSIDE COLLAPSE INTO RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE:

On Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 1304 Hours (1:04 PM PST), five Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, including Urban Search and Rescue specialists, a Heavy Rescue Unit, one EMS Battalion Captain, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of 5th Battalion Commander Christopher Kawai responded to a landslide behind 1525 North Marlay Drive in the Hollywood Hills. The first Company to arrive reported the sudden collapse of 3,000 cubic feet of gunite-covered rock and soil from a near-vertical hillside abutting an 800 square-foot single-family home. The tons of earth nearly bifurcated the 2-bedroom wood-frame residence and disgorged its contents while moving the 63 year-old building as much as a foot from its pilings. The one adult male occupant was able to scramble from his home without injury. Firefighters quickly established a perimeter and determined that no persons were trapped or missing. Residents in nearby homes were systematically evacuated in a calm and orderly fashion while Firefighters stopped all vehicular traffic, secured utilities and surveyed the scene for escalating danger. An intact in-ground swimming pool at a residence immediately uphill from the site was emptied in an expeditious fashion by Firefighters to minimize any added stress on the denuded hillside, though no additional structural compromise was noted. As workers from the City’s Department of Building and Safety formally assessed the structures and soil, specially trained Firefighters conferred with the displaced resident prior to retrieving his most prized and necessary possessions from the nearly destroyed home. The building was subsequently “red-tagged” by Building and Safety as being unfit for entry. A monetary loss is still being tabulated, while the cause of the landslide remains under active investigation by the Department of Building and Safety.
