    Question Fire Poles

Our city insurance provider is questioning the use of our fire pole. Anyone out there have answers to the following:

Any Documented Accidents Using Fire Pole? Stairs?
Do you have written policies for use?
Do you have a written training program?

    Thanks!

We haven't had the poles for years now. The city removed them because of the number of injuries that were being sustained and yes they were documented.

The odd thing is that after using the stairs for the last 11 years, we've had far fewer injuries than when we were using the poles. The upside is , yes fewer injuries. The downside is that it does take us a little longer (about 1 minute) to get downstairs.

    There was no written policy.

Yes we did and all trial firefighters were trained on sliding the pole when they went through the academy.

You might want to check on back articles on FH.com. I remeber a article a while back out of California that said New stations out thier are having pole put in due toinjuries from going down the stairs.

I know that our new station will have a pole, when construction begins beginning of next spring.

I just joined a department where I go to school and we have a pole. I don't know if there is any written protocol as to its use but we are only supposed to use it for calls because of a previous injury that was caused by someone being an idiot as I heard. There was no training on it but it is simple and if you use your head it can be a safe way to reduce response time.

I think this was the last post about poles, there may be something in there that helps, I didn't re-read it.
