    Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq'

Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive search operations
Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been arrested in Iraq, according to unconfirmed reports.
He was detained in his ancestral home town of Tikrit, Iraqi Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani said on the official Iranian news agency IRNA.

The US Defence Department said it had no confirmation of the report.

Saddam Hussein is the most wanted man on the list issued by US authorities but has not been seen since Baghdad fell to US forces in April.

    Intensive search

A spokeswoman for US-led coalition forces in Baghdad said that a "very important" announcement would be made at a news conference at 1200 GMT but would not give further details.

Nazem Dabag, representative in Iran of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) also said that Saddam Hussein had been arrested.

Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive searches by US-led forces in Iraq but previous attempts to locate him have proved unsuccessful.

On 22 July his sons, Uday and Qusay, were killed in a raid by US forces in the northern city of Mosul.

No injuries, no shots fired, Hussein taken alive to face a War Crimes Tribuynal. It doesn't get any better than this!

    What was that noise?

That was the wind going out of the Dems sails as they scratched another one off the "GWB weaknesses for 2004" list.

Hussein, found hiding at the bottom of a ventilated 6-foot pit, was captured without resistance.
They should have just filled in the hole!

C'mon George. This was done by R, D, I, L, RTL and C soldiers. Dubbya was, no doubt drinking eggnog when this took place. This was a victory for OUR military, not the Republican Party.

No need to be sorry. I have no doubt this will boost W's ratings. I'll make you a deal, I will cast my vote for W when we get UBL, remember him? The guy who killed all those AMERICANS! Now that the ace of spades is out of the way, perhaps we can get back to the reason we went into the middle east in the first place.

Since George has taken the political virginity from this thread I will put in my two cents.

Capturing Saddam will only help Bush if the attacks on our troops cease, or are greatly reduced. While Baath party insurgents may have been at the core of those commiting the attacks, the terrorists flowing across the border answering calls of jihad had no loyalty to Saddam. If they continue to plan and carry out attacks, capturing Saddam will give no political advantage to the President.

Let me make this clear. I hope the attacks against our troops are over. I hope this gets us out of Iraq relatively quickly so we can move on and find UBL. I just fear that capturing Saddam may result in a backlash against our country in the short term.

Congratulations to the world's finest fighting force! You want it, you go get it, AND THEY GOT IT! Great Job!. Our prayers are now that you remain safe, and come home soon.

On a side note, Why do they refer to some of the "other side" as the "Baath" party? It's obvious from photos of those captured that they haven't taken one lately. Stay Safe....

E229, of course you are right. This was a marvelously executed strategic victory for our military. There will be another oppportunity to prove to the world why we are the greatest superpower the world has ever known. We did not kill him. We will not mistreat him. He will recieve the fiar and just trial that International Law calls for.

Perhaps in my haste to post I overlooked the obvious. But there can be no denial that this is a tremendous political victory for the Pres. as well.

I think that there is no connection to the search for UBL and the search for Hussein. Just this week they have kicked it up a notch in Afghanistan. That mission, while under the radar, has not stopped. I have a funny feeling that that search will be over soon, too.

I hope you're right. UBL should have always been our top priority.

As for Saddam, perhaps the Iraqis should be allowed to give him a "fair trial" a la Mussolini!

This is from Peggy Noonan's column. I thought it was particularly poignant and appropriate:

"This is a great day in modern history. A terrible man whose existence had been for decades actively harmful of humanity was forcibly removed from power, run to ground, and has been captured living in a hole. As I write, the television is showing videotape of his hair being checked for lice and his mouth being inspected with a pencil light for signs of disease. The white plastic pinpoint light illuminates his throat and gums. It looks like the mouth of hell. He has been utterly defeated and quelled. He can't kill anybody now. He cannot gas women and children with chemicals that kill them; he cannot personally torture dissidents, or imprison them. He cannot tell his soldiers to throw opponents off the tops of buildings. He can't impose his sickness and sadism on the world. The children of Baghdad dance in the streets. A nightmare is over.

America did this. American troops did this. The American people, by supporting those troops and this effort, did it. And a particular group of soldiers led by a particular U.S. army officer did it. As Dana Priest of the Washington Post has just reported on NBC, he is a big, tall, bearlike guy who loves his job and whose attitude toward his mission was, apparently, a natural and constitutional optimism. We don't yet know his name, but he'll be famous by tomorrow morning."

    Post QUOTES

Reaction to the capture of Saddam Hussein:

"It marks the end of the road for him and all who killed and
bullied in his name." - President Bush.

"Praise the Lord. ... This is a day of glory for the American
military, American intelligence, and it's a day of triumph and joy
for anybody in the world who cares about freedom and human rights
and peace." - Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.

"I congratulate our troops on capturing Saddam Hussein. He's a
bad person and we're all better off with him in captivity. But you
should know that my views on Iraq have not changed one bit." -
    Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.

"For 35 years, the people of Iraq suffered under the rule of
one of the most cruel and vicious tyrants in the history of the
world. His capture puts a period to the statement that says the
Saddam Hussein era is ended." - Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., chairman
of the House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations.

"Capturing Saddam Hussein and ensuring that this brutal
dictator will never return to power is an important step toward
stabilizing Iraq for the Iraqis. Let's also be clear: Our problems
in Iraq have not been caused by one man and this is a moment when
the administration can and must launch a major effort to gain
international support and win the peace." - Sen. John Kerry,
    D-Mass.

"This is a major, major step, a remarkable day for the world."
    - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist R-Tenn.

"I supported this effort in Iraq without regard for the
political consequences because it was the right thing to do. I
still feel that way now and today is a major step toward
stabilizing Iraq and building a new democracy." - Rep. Dick
    Gephardt, D-Mo.

"I hope this will see a diminishing in the violence against
American soldiers in Iraq." - Retired Gen. Wesley Clark.
