Firefighters Arrested 11 Times for Drunk Driving
ALBUQUERQUE, NM-December 17, 2003 — Firefighters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will face yearly background checks – now that officials have discovered one of their colleagues has been arrested eleven times for drunken driving.

The veteran firefighter is on paid leave pending a review.

The mayor says, "It's outrageous." He says the firefighter needs to be in jail, not working for the city.

Most of the city Fire Department's 681 employees will now be screened, beginning in February. New recruits are being checked for arrests, convictions and active warrants.

Just my thoughts here, but shouldn't someone down at town hall be doing this already.....

26, I agree with that-- Aren't background checks part of the norm around this country? I would be insulted if my town failed to do this for anyone planning to serve my family OR be partnered with me. This isn't the way I want to find job openings, but I would hope departments continually review their employees.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong
