*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Friday, December 26, 2003 at 2105 Hours (9:05 PM PST), eleven Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances and three Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 530 South Catalina Street in the Koreatown area. The first Company to arrive reported a three-story building of apartments over parking with fire in a top floor unit. A large rooftop natural gas-powered water heater had caught fire, causing a sizeable volume of polyvinyl chloride piping to melt, with the molten plastic seeping into remote recesses of the roof, walls and ceiling joists - spurring a stubborn fire. Using handlines and deft vertical ventilation, Firefighters quickly stemmed the fireís progress and confined the flames to the walls and attic, extinguishing the blaze in just 31 minutes. During the aggressive firefight, one Firefighter sustained a minor laceration. He was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Though a total of eight apartment units were in some way affected by the blaze, the well-coordinated efforts of Firefighters made all but one tenable. The family of three from that unit sought their own alternate accommodations. Loss from the fire is estimated at $28,000 ($24,000 structure & $4,000 contents). The cause of this blaze is attributed to a malfunction of the water heater.

Helping Our Own

"firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.

Please check out the following website - Maybe your FD can help out.
