Union gives fire chief a vote of confidence

Hoping its leader won't get caught up in the far-reaching changes sweeping through City Hall, the Miami Association of Fire Fighters has given its full endorsement to Fire Chief William Bryson -- one of the few remaining department heads from Miami's former administration.

''It's hard to believe that not too long ago the department was in a state of decay following years of fiscal abandonment,'' says a letter by the union sent to Bryson, Mayor Manny Diaz and city commissioners. ``You accepted the challenge of rebuilding this department into one of the premier fire departments in the nation.''

Bryson enjoys wide support among firefighters in his department. The vote of confidence was 100 percent.

The city has undergone a top-to-bottom overhaul in upper management over the past two years, since Diaz was elected.
