NORTH BELLMORE, N.Y. (AP) - A New Year's Day house fire killed
an elderly woman and her bedridden adult son, authorities said.
Nassau County Police identified the victims as Christine Mastil,
82, and her son, 54-year-old David Mastil. Published reports said
David Mastil had Down syndrome and other health problems.
Firefighters were called to the family's Rosemont Street home at
about 11:22 a.m. Thursday.
The blaze appeared to have started on the ground floor of the
home, according to Chief Nicholas White of the North Bellmore Fire
Department. The mother was found at her son's bedside, White said.
Christine Mastil's husband, identified by police as 82-year-old
Max Mastil, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with
smoke inhalation and burns.
The blaze was brought under control in about an hour, White
said. Three firefighters were treated for minor burns and smoke
inhalation.
