Fire gutted a second-floor apartment in Barberville and killed six pit bull dogs early Thursday, according to Volusia County Fire Services.

No people were hurt in the 12:38 a.m. blaze in the 1700 block of U.S. 17, but it brought out firefighters from Lake County, DeLand and Rima Ridge, said Walter Nettles, Volusia County Fire Services spokesman.

Firefighters battled for about an hour to extinguish the fire, which also damaged the shop on the building's first floor. Some of the dogs were in cages and others loose in the apartment, Nettles said.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
