Coal mine accident kills Salina man
SALINA, Sevier County Investigators say an accident at a coal mine claimed the life of a 44-year-old man Saturday night.
Russell Crane of Salina was killed at the Southern Utah Fuel Co. mine when a large chain broke and struck him in the head, a Sevier County sheriff's statement said.
The incident happened about 10 p.m. Saturday. The chain that killed Crane was used to pull equipment at the mine. It apparently got stuck and broke under tension, the statement said.
Crane's body was transported to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield. Authorities believe the death was an accident and continue to interview witnesses, the statement said.
Mine safety officials were called to the scene to investigate the accident. The mine is owned by Canyon Fuel Co., has about 295 workers and produces more than seven million tons of coal annually.
