*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

AUSTRALIA - 01/08/04
500 firefighters focus on containment lines - 1.45pm

More than 500 firefighters are working on a number of fires across NSW, the two main areas of activity being Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to the north of Sydney and a fire just north of Wilton in Wollondilly Shire, south west of Sydney.

Pittwater Foreshore Communities Warned about Fire

The fire in Ku-ring-gai National Park has flared this afternoon causing spotting activity and breaches of containments lines, however, there is no threat to property at this stage.

The fire has burnt about 1000ha since it began yesterday.

The fire is spotting southeast of current containment lines near Cottage Pt Rd and the corner of McCarrs Ck Rd and West Head Rd.

Fallback containment lines will be used and crews are continuing to focus on backburning and containment line work.

Overnight the fire moved up a ridge and over West Head Road south of Elvina Bay Track and north of the West Head Rd junction with General San Martin Dr.

About 300 firefighters from RFS, NPWS and NSW Fire Brigades are working in the area in 45 appliances supported by six helicopters. Crews have been preparing perimeter lines around Pittwater foreshore communities since last night.

Extra resources are in foreshore communities today.

Because of the spread of the fire overnight, firefighters are asking the communities of Elvina Bay, Lovett Bay, Church Point, Bayview, Tower Bay and Scotland Island to be aware of fire in the area and take the proper precautions around their properties.

The fire is not directly impacting these communities at this time but they will experience significant smoke impact and may experience ember attack if winds cause the fire to spot.

Firefighters have worked extensively in these areas overnight to ensure communities are prepared. Residents are asked to clear combustibles away from their homes, leaf litter out of gutters and prepare firefighting equipment such as hoses, buckets and pumps in case they are required.

Members of the public are asked to avoid McCarrs Ck Rd, which is closed from Church Point to Terry Hills and use alternate routes. Boaters are also asked to stay clear of the area particularly Akuna Bay. A pumper is stationed at the marina.

Access to Church Point through Terry Hills is restricted to residents only. Access to Cottage Point is through Terry Hills only and is restricted to residents.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is closed until further notice as a result of bushfires in the area.

Road closures in the area include:

McCarrs Creek Road between Church Point and Terry Hills
West Head Road
Liberator General San Martin Drive
Ku-ring-gai Chase Road between Mt Colah and Bobbin Head, expected to open later today
Bobbin Head Road between North Turramurra and Bobbin Head, expected to open later today

Access to Cottage Point, and access to Church Point via Terry Hills, are restricted to residents only. Access to Ku-ring-gai Chase Road and Bobbin Head Road are restricted to employees of Halvorsen Boats only until the road reopens.

All motorists are asked to drive carefully because of the possibility of smoke and emergency vehicles on nearby roads. Boaters are also asked to stay clear of the areas around McCarrs Creek and south-western Pittwater.

Wollondilly

Over 70 firefighters in 21 units are working on containment lines at a fire north of Wilton, west of Appin in Wollondilly Shire.

The fire moved very little overnight with low temperatures and high humidity assisting firefighters.

The fire has burned 550ha after starting near the Condell Park property yesterday.

Overnight the fire moved to cross Allens Creek just north of Wilton and the Cataract Gorge. The fire has not moved greatly today, however it is causing a lot of black smoke as it burns in heavily fuelled areas of Allens Creek.

There are no concerns for properties at this stage however, crews continue to work on backburning activities around Douglas Park Rd and north of Wilton to ensure residential areas are protected and containment lines are established.

A Remote Area Firefighting Team from Sydney Catchment Authority is working in the area where F5 crosses Allens Creek. Firefighters are working to limit the possibility of the fire moving under the freeway into gorge country at this point if a northeasterly wind affects the blaze.

Residents and motorists can expect to see smoke and tanker activity but the fire is not causing major concerns.

Weather conditions are not expected to affect the fire greatly at this stage however firefighters will constantly monitor the situation as they work on containment.
